He’s going to be a starting GK and highly likely the next England number 1 in the early part of that contract.

Pickford is only 31. There is nothing to say he's going to be England No1.

I’d suggest the main thing that says he is, is his ability.

Doesnt have to be. Finding a left winger to play as back up to Gordon isn't going to be so difficult, where as Ramsey as an upgrade to Willock might be the exact target Howe wants.

Getting one as good as Barnes who will come to sit on the bench would be like

Eddie Howe:

"I don't know the intricacies of our financial position depending on Champions League qualification. I don't think it changes too much, in terms of our targets and who we look to try and sign, just because we're trying to go for the best players in a very small pool of players to pick from.

"Obviously, I think it's where we want to be, that's where we want to play, we want to be in the highest level competitions we can. We want to test ourselves to the absolute maximum and try and recreate those great nights here."

Still have nightmares over the small pool of players quotes from last summer.

But maybe Barnes doesn't want to sit on the bench anymore. Not that he wouldn't necessarily be on the bench for Villa though. I think he'd have to go outside the top 8 clubs to be guaranteed starter every week and even then it's just an assumption.

Can you class 1 player as a "small pool of players"?

Yeah.

As long as they get players in, I guess it's not too much of a problem.

I do get the impression there's very specific players Howe wants for the first team in particular.

Think we'll definitely be after Guehi and Trafford again for sure, after the interest we showed last summer.

Maybe also DCL and Elanga as we tried for both as part of the PSR sales we made.

I wouldn't swap Barnes for Ramsey however I'm very relaxed about letting players to who aren't Isak and Tonali.

PSR demands sacrifices if your us or Villa as shit as it is.

Wouldn’t sell Hall or Tino either

Emegha, the Strasbourg striker, has been linked with us in France. Looks like our type of profile. He's very big but quick. Shades of Mateta about him.

Chelsea will do some shenanigans around him you’d imagine.

Logically speaking - it must impact summer spending. CL is a minimum of £50m guaranteed. You'd have to win the Europa League to get close to that. And I'm sure there's bonuses from sponsors and an increase in sponsorship demand and FMV.

But it's not Eddie's job to worry about that

I know he’s not the profile we’ve ever signed under Howe, but do wonder if we’re reaching stage where we may make a signing like that to help push to next level in both major comps.
