He'll have no legs in 6 months.

Imagine thinking we should sign the OAP captain of a rival.

Thought is legs were going end of last season. Maybe just flogged. Definitely had lost his energy.

To be fair, if it’s on the cheap he’s a lot better than Longstaff and would hardly be a long term option. Suspect a signing like this would be more to tide us over than anything. We’ve already fucked the window and we do need options. It might be better than spending tens of millions on someone we don’t really want, then not having the money to spend on someone we do want in a future window.

Maybe unfair, but if someone said at the start of the window our signings would be Ramsdale, Elanga, Thiaw, McGinn and Wissa and Isak was leaving the majority would be underwhelmed at best. We have seemingly had no upside from qualifying for the champions league in terms of transfers.

In theory at least it's not a bad idea to look for squad depth this way, good players from PSR-constrained teams that are on the verge of exiting their primes and losing resale value.

Would get good value for our money now, and the hope would be that in 2-3 years when they're no longer useful we won't mind losing money on them because our revenue will have grown to accommodate.

This window will be studied in years to come. Complete disaster class.

Haha I just sent this to my mate funnily enough…..Newcastle’s 25/26 transfer window needs studied by academics it’s been a fuckin farce from start to (almost) finish. Not signed a single player that takes us up a level

If we are being honest and ruthless it’s a midtable sides transfer window

Totally, accept the reluctance towards age, presumable price, and the fact he’s a right twat on the field (although that doesn’t matter when he’s on your side).

But surely everyone could see he’d add significant depth to our squad?

He'd be class, I'd love him here even given his age. It's just that it would be the hardest possible deal to do and feels like it could drag us into another saga.

Would be good if we had already started working on it with Villa and everyone was receptive, but with how summer has been going I doubt it.

If you rewound to May and asked a Mackem to write our summer, I don't think even they would've come up with Elanga, Ramsdale and McGinn in by the start of the season, with Isak going on strike. It would be too far.

Think you are being unfair on Elanga. He has a huge ceiling, and improves our floor. The rest, absolutely.

I wasn't criticising Elanga, but he's part of the overall picture of the summer as things stand, and it's the overall picture that's grim.

FWIW I don't actually think McGinn is a bad player, but again, circumstances taken into account it's difficult to feel anything towards him.

Trippier has worked out great for us. Id rather Mcginn than no additional CM

True, but Trippier and McGinn don't belong in the same breath IMO
