NUFC Transfer Rumours

Murphy Is a great example of how effective players putting up actual numbers is like, he's a horrible example to use to the contrary

The likelyhood of Ndiaye ever having a better season in this league than Murphy did last year is slim. His end product is nowhere near - Howe spotted it from the start which is why he always stuck with him.

Yeah I wasn't clear in my post, I like Ndiaye, and I'd love someone like Maxi back in the squad despite his poor numbers.

I've not looked at the numbers, but when fit (not often enough) I thought Maxi had a decent amount of "goal involvements" under Howe.

Sadly one of the many reasons the manager is under pressure right now. Sticking with half-hearted, mediocre players.
Watch yesterdays second goal and tally that up in his numbers.

Out of interest Nidiaye at Everton 17 goals in 64 vs  Murphy at Newcastle 25 goals in 259.

To be clear - I don't think Nidiaye will win us the Champions League, but he's a far better footballer than Jacob Murphy ever will be.

Better just to trust your eyes in some cases.

You're missing the point, I would swap Murphy for Ndiaye in a heartbeat and I'm sure Howe would too at this point.

However Murphy has been able to provide the end product Howe wants from his wingers which is why he started almost every game last year (20 goals and assists), and the season before he provided 10 goals and assists in just over 1000 minutes as Howe subbed him on in most games. 6 in 1200 the season before.

Gordon had 21 goals and assists 2 years ago, 10 last year (a bad year).

Barnes had 13 in 1700 minutes last year.

Kaka is constantly banging on about how we should have bought this or that player and how we're so bad at scouting, but it seems pretty obvious we're looking for players in the wide positions who we think we can get great output from, and chose to try for prem proven options.

We chose Elanga which so far looks to have been laughably bad, but you cannot win them all (hopefully he improves).

Personally think assists are one of the most useless stats in football, and Murphy is solid evidence of that. In general all they show is how good your other players are at finishing.

Not to say he doesn't produce the odd worldie cross mind, he obviously does, but when you don't have an Isak in the middle turning every half chance into a goal, the rest of his limitations stick out like a sore thumb.

I’m not sure that I agree with you 100% on your police work there Andy…

Never thought much of assists given you can give the ball to someone a yard away who then pings it top corner from 30 yards out. Obviously there’s something to them, but I’m old school in the sense that the eye test is the best measure of a player.

His purple patch last season was purely that. He’s a lovely bloke and an amazing character who can proudly say he played a major role in this story and especially delivering glory to us for the first time in a fucking age, but sentiment aside he’s absolutely shite and shouldn’t be near a Premier League team, let alone ones with aspirations of ours (however lost they may seem).

I guess chances created is possibly a better stat but agree that assists aren't a useless stat

In a world where you can get an assist if it deflects off your arse then Messi carries the ball 30 yards past 9 players and scores, it's a useless stat IMO.

The player who passed the ball 1 yard to Messi is awarded the assist and bumps their stats up despite doing the sum total of fuck all

Whereas the winger who beats a full back and pings a billion inch perfect crosses in to a dogshit striker who can’t finish for toffee gets fuck all to show for their crossing skillz in their stats

That's not true though, the winger's xA would go through the roof in thst scenario. There's also 'key passes' and/or 'chances created' being recorded too.

We’re just talking about the “assists” metric though

Watched him and Endrick give PSG all sorts of problems on Sunday.

Nice to see Steve Nickson's name in the mix again and to see us looking at the French League again too.
