He said along the lines of we were vulnerable last year and clubs took advantage (Brighton, Forest). We are not vulnerable this year and might be in a position to do that to other clubs but wasn’t sure. If you make things up and get disappointed you only have yourself to blame. “‘It's great that the window opens on June 1,’ he said. ‘The challenge is for us to sign players in early June. But it doesn't always work like that. I hope in reality it does, but it rarely works like that.“

STM
2 hours ago, Fak said: We're not yet in a position to always buy players who are the cream of the crop. Until we are we're going to have to make do with moves for players like these and hope Howe does his magic on them and hope they're injuries are behind them. See Livramento. Who exactly are we talking about here? Haaland, Wirtz that level? No we can't afford the wages of those players but that's not to do with their ability, as much as their valuation, which aren't always the same thing. For example we signed Isak, who's at the very least comparable to Haaland. We've signed Tonali who id bracket as being an elite midfielder. Liverpool have won loads in the last 6/7 years and they didn't sign "the cream of the crop", they paid boatloads for VVD from... Southampton which quite a few scoffed at. They signed Allison and Salah from Italy and neither would be classed as entirely unattainable to us now. They also built their squad with some really smart signings: Robertson, Firmino, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Milner to name a few. In short, my point is that you dont need to sign known superstars, you need to sign unknown superstars. Which isn't easy but do-able.

Everyone has their price, this has been true in football since forever and I doubt that has changed. The question more is a team willing to pay what they want? Deuce
53 minutes ago, Bunk Moreland said: Translation of the article it cites: "Giorgio Scalvini is untouchable . Atalanta has forcefully reiterated its no to Newcastle , who in recent days has tested the waters for the central defender from Bergamo, offering significant figures. The Goddess' response was dry: between 40 and 50 million, a valuation that far exceeds the player's current market value. Despite last season's injuries, in fact, the Nerazzurri club considers the 2003-born player an asset on which to base the defense of the future." Assuming the translation is vaguely accurate, it seems to be saying that Atalanta is simultaneously saying he's not for sale... unless you offer us 40-50m euros, which they consider to be a "fuck off" price of sorts due to his injury? 50m euros would be about what we paid for Tino. I could see us paying up tbh NUFC: €40m for Scalvini Atalanta: fuck off and die, you absolute cunts. NUFC: €41m Atalanta:

James
27 minutes ago, Deuce said: our bid was so desultory they pulled him off the market completely I got this as that they accept that our bid is fair given the recent injuries and unlikely to get more for him from anyone else this summer. BUT they think his real value to them is higher so long as he maintains fitness. therefore he isn’t a player that they can sell

I guess its similar to us with Isak, he isn't for sale, but if an insane offer came in we'd have to look at it.

Although I don't think they're explicitly a selling club like the Portuguese clubs are they've let Hojlund, Koopmeiners, Romero, Kulisevski, Bastoni, Gosens, etc. go for the right price Edited 6 hours ago by Bunk Moreland
