NUFC Transfer Rumours

OK, came across some Twitter post where he proposed some 17yo for us, maybe in place of Willock iirc. Didnt seem reasonable

Dunno how that's automatically unreasonable like, we have the third oldest squad in the league.

I've been watching him long enough to know he's not. He absolutely knows his stuff imo.

He’s got a good podcast - defo knows his stuff and any NUFC recommendations he backs up with footage/stats etc too - comes across as a really canny guy too

Yeah, a lot of his stuff is basically The Athletic's Sensible Transfer videos but better because he knows Newcastle in much more detail and doesn't make some of the basic errors they do.

You'll know this, but for everyone who doesn't watch him, he identifies what we need then goes through players that would be ideal.

I'm not that clued up on upcoming talent but his recommendations don't seem far fetched and he's quite concise so it's not a scattergun approach.

It's only later down the line when we're then linked with the players he's talked about, or they get signed by Dortmund, Brighton, Palace, PSG etc that the proof is a bit more in the pudding. He's been banging on about how we should get Akliouche for 2 or 3 years now.

What's the name of the podcast? Will add it to the rotation.

You don't sign a 17-yo with the intention of them adding big value in the current season. Doesn't make them bad transfers but doesn't address the current problems. We do need more long-term thinking.

IIRC it was working on the assumption that Willock is our 3rd choice LCM. Don't think there's a great deal wrong in putting a 17 year old in a role that you wouldn't expect much value from anyway so that they can learn the ropes.

TBH I feel like you sign 17yo's because they are talented and have a good enough mindset. Not necessarily because there's a squad space for them. A 17 yo may not be fundamentally ready for top level elite football - especially in midfield.

If you have the budget you have a 25 man squad of senior players. That's 2 for every position and 3GKs. You add kids to that. At 19 they need minutes but they can get them on loan too. At 17, they can sit and watch mens football often.

As of now Willock is one of 6 CMs and we play 3. Willock is not like Lascelles who is the 5th CB of 2.

---

Separately - with Howe's style of play I think we'll always need a slightly older squad. There's a certain mentality Howe demands that benefits experience.

Howe doesn't play youth though so cannot see the point in targetting young players.

I would've brought sueng soo up by now he's tearing it up in the reserves.

Playing Lewis Hall and Lewis Miley suggests otherwise. He might not play them straightaway but he definitely creates pathways for youth players who can make the jump.

Cannot really see how many 17yo there are in the world that can play in EPL, nevermind in Howe's Newcastle. Especially in midfield.

As a third choice LCM, they likely wouldn't need to. That was the premise of it.

Does he? Anderson had to leave to develop miley couldn't get a sniff until he got shoehorned in at right back. Osula was available majority of the time to take the weight off isak last season and woltemade this season yet barely got 10 minutes a game.

Villa and frankfurt are sniffing about they must see something in him that howe hasn't.

None of that really aligns with what's happened I don't think.

Anderson only left because of FFP, Miley has played 22 times this season, 11 starts and only 4 of those have been at RB. Osula has had cup games and sub appearances this season and was nowhere near ready last season. It says everything to me that Osula's perceived value is being based on Villa and Frankfurt being interested, and not Howe signing him.

We'd be targetting them with a view to getting the best young talent I would imagine. We can't afford to buy off the shelf ready superstars because the cartel clubs will pay more.

Yea, I listened this about squad overhaul. Just don't see the point. Schär to be sold in this window? For why? We have 2 fit centrebacks. We would get maybe 1-2 million for him. These talks are totally unrealistic FM-stuff.

Alex Murphy (born 2004) is not "premierleague ready", but "we should be looking someone unknown cheaper like Branimir Mlacic" (born 2007, monitored by Barcelona). Come on man, if we sold Schär, there is no fking way we bring 18yo cb from Hajduk Split in January, who would be 1 injury away from starting every game. We are not going to sell one key player and bring some 18-year-old from Croatia. Wilson would be asking to be fired.

Just don't see the point listing players and saying we need to get this and this. Maza just signed for Leverkusen, no way Leverkusen will sell him.

I think world is full of these podcasts nowadays. This guy might be decent I don't know, but usually they are a waste of time.

No idea what Villa/Emery see in Osula. Seems a nice kid and can cause the oppo chaos when he comes on but I'll be amazed and furious if Villa turn him into anything above half decent.

He said there was talk of it, which there is, and that he wouldn't do it, but if we did, we should look for a Thiaw understudy.

It's not for you, that's fine. The people who watch him and enjoy it can do just that and you can do you.

Yea, but "there was talk"? There are always talk when window is open. Shearer was in his 30s linked with a move to Osasuna by the press. We really can't sell Schär with the games we have and with Botman and Burn out. Does this Croatian lad even talk English? Just find these 18-19 year olds linked to us middle of season odd. We are not really a team for a wonderkid to succeed.

But yea, he has pretty decent points about our game, most of which are mentioned here many times also.

When you look at the success rate of strikers bought in this summer, it's not that surprising. Sesko and Gyokares are hardly tearing it up, and they were the most highly touted young strikers on the market. There's a £70m price ticket on just about any striker in Europe these days. At least with Osula you know he'll come in and cause some chaos. He's scored a couple of goals for us as well this season, one of them was pretty decent.
