we could and should have invested a lot more in our academy, a decent Dof, and a multiclub model.

We will. Lots of things needed attention let’s be honest after MA. Rumours we are looking to buy Textor’s Brazilian club.

We need like 6/7 academy players that are good enough to step in when needed for a few games here and there. Like most other clubs seem to have.

We're averaging like one every 5 years it feels like. We had a bumper few years with Miley and Anderson.

Edit: one of which we fucked off.

It’s quite frustrating. Last regular defender to come through was Dummett,  we’ve had Forster and Woodman fail their auditions as keepers with Krul the last regular. Similarly Armstrong and Campbell up front. Last CB was Steven Taylor and last right back feels like Aaron fucking Hughes. Andy Carroll the last striker in 2008. Aarons the last winger?

Longstaff, Anderson and Miley the shining lights in midfield.

Improving the academy is arguably even more difficult than improving the first team and is the sort of thing that takes 5-10 years of sustained investment before you've built up enough of a reputation that you are consistently bringing in top prospects outside of your geographic area.

I think we're in a much better place than we were when Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll were basically the only academy prospects to become first team regulars over about two decades. But still a ways to go.

Assuming there are no financial constraints on academy development (?), it seems like the easiest thing for PIF to pour money into. Build the best facilities, hire the best coaches and staff, etc.

Don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, yes, they should be pouring all of the money into it.

I hope we don't go multiclub. It's repulsive.

Multiclub is one of those things that I would opt out of even if it definitely makes us more successful over the long run (I'm skeptical of that as well).

It’d be interesting if English football were to develop a model like in Spain or Germany where reserve sides compete in the same pyramid. Much prefer a “Newcastle United B” cutting about in League Two to PIF buying Montpellier and making them our whipping boy.

With obvious constraints so that Chelsea can’t squirrel away PL-quality talent in their reserve side and beat the piss out of lower league sides.

We have a cup competition with this feature. It wouldn't be a good idea to allow kids to play in our lower leagues though. We have plenty of teams in the pyramid without the need for it

It doesn’t count towards PSR - you can invest as much as you want into an academy.  Yet we’ve seen very little investment in almost five years.  Odd that, given that without PSR PIF definitely would’ve spunked billions by now.

FTFY.  Can’t think of anything worse than ripping up the football pyramid and depriving other towns of professional football so that a handful of rich clubs can bloat their squads with pile-it-high youngsters for PSR purposes.  Happily, the FL would no doubt tell any club suggesting this to fuck right off.
