Good player. But too similar to Gordon. You have two physical LW, powerful and very direct but with little creativity.

What is the point to spend 40m for a clone of Gordon and then playing with Murphy on the right?

I think they're quite different. Gordon's got good technique, can do things with the ball, go past his man.
Barnes is a wide forward who should run into space and be at the end of attacks, very good finisher.

Yes but not very well and not as well as Hall. And we didn’t have Kelly when we signed Hall.

Beggars belief that signing someone as talented as Hall is somehow bad.

We can’t do anything right at the moment. The season has got off to a difficult start and we’ve all become emo about everything NUFC has done.

That's because we had a relatively easy start so really we would have wanted to be about 4pts better off than where we are. The early points papered over some cracks, but most of us will take that all day. Now we are playing better stuff but can't get the results because we keep fucking up at both ends of the pitch. Hopefully we'll click sooner rather than later, but I think Howe himself would be disappointed where we are currently sitting.

True but not sure I would say it papered over cracks when everyone saw the cracks and talked about them constantly

Not sure what we paid for him, but at the moment, looks to be another depreciating asset.

I think the frustrating thing is he wasn't really needed and the money should have been spent elsewhere.

Thought he missed a sitter today the way the match thread went on

Turned out he just tried to find space for a shot and couldn't.

His main issue is his only trick is to cut inside and teams won't give him the space to shoot now they know that.

They've known it for years and he's still found himself being one of the most productive wingers in the league.

He was really poor today. Got bullied off the ball a lot (ref didn't help here, mind) and then didn't make good decisions when he had the chance. Still think he's class, but he might genuinely be a better option off the bench.

Of all our recruitment it’s the the only one i couldn’t see the logic in. All the others i can see the logic being short/medium/long term. Not being critical of the player. You could argue he’s been our most productive player this season but the fee and how we’ve been so restricted it just didn’t make sense unless AG IS our RW for the short to medium term.

Clearly one of the best finishers in the squad but seems to offer very little else. I really like him but the alarm bells were ringing from City onwards, overall play has been average at best, seems to be bullied on the ball. Hope it’s just a spell…

I think if he had a bit more pace then the one trick would be enough. He's not quick enough to go on the outside and keep defenders guessing like Gordon. He can strike a lovely shot if he's allowed though.

Good output masks that he isn’t a good fit for the team.

Now there are three players I’d choose to start on the LW ahead of him.

I’d still have him first off the bench if we need a goal but either Howe goes or he needs to go.

Good player but one dimensional. He'd be an impact player if PSR didn't exist.

I wonder if that was/is the plan and we are looking for PSR to fall apart. You just have to look at Liverpool to see what difference multiple dangerous wide players can make both sides with different playing styles. Can dig you out of many holes and gain you points from anywhere when not playing at your best.

Nunez........£64-75m

Diaz............£50m

Salah..........£34m in 2017. Best RW in the world??

Gakpo.........£35m

Bit more understandable why Howe has been using him as an impact sub now isn't it?

Aye, which makes the signing all the more questionable in the first place.

Counterpoint: Trossard and Jota. Nothing remotely unusual about having a specialist impact sub to make the difference for you.

It’s not when you have a balanced squad. When you have more pressing positions to fill and have to be careful with funds I’d say it is.

It was an opportunity though wasn't it? I don't think Barnes is the player I'm looking at and thinking we could have chosen a different position to spend our money on. For that I'd probably say just going all in on Guehi and not pivoting to an RW much earlier.
