I miss the BIG partnership

I don't. There were good reasons for trying it but we've won 8 games in a row since we ditched it...

Body language-tastic but he looks like he's lost heart since he was putting everything into the start of the season, was our only reliable offensive outlet, and still didn't look like he was gonna be made a true starter for us. Would understand if that got him down, albeit you'd want him to keep digging away.

Annoyingly, as I don't like to lose an argument, I was chatting with a friend who very early on took just one look at Barnes and didn't rate him.

I then spent quite a long time condescendingly explaining to her why she was wrong, as he was a good finisher, great assists etc. She merely wrinkled her face in a "we'll see" kind of way.

But as time has gone by, I can't get that out of my head and think she's right. He's a good player in the right team, but here he seems like a jigsaw piece that doesn't quite fit. He doesn't defend or track back and goes invisible at times.

He's not even a supersub any more, I think Murphy is better on the right and he doesn't hold a candle to Gordon on the left. Like I say, a good player but I'd sell him.

We bought two left wingers when we had a need on the right wing. That is not Barnes' fault and forcing him into a position that does not fit him is not a solution. It wasn't Joelinton's fault he wasn't a striker either.  Our two deep lw is what we should aspire to at every position.  Pretty good at lcb Botman/Burn and rb Livramento/Trippier too.

Probably not a coincidence that Murphy has done much better since we pushed Bruno up close to him. Just as Bruno was highly involved on the right when Trippier and Miggy were doing well. Only exceptional players can do well with little support. Even isak struggled to make an impression when he was isolated up front. I would question how much game time Barnes has been given in a team near full strength with a balanced and functioning system.

I think Barnes has done reasonably well for us, and IMO was a good buy. It is mostly super stupid PSR rules, the need to allocate your resources with surgical precision, that questions the deal. Since PSR also rules out buying unproven potential that does not come to fruition, this also pushes the club toward Tino, Hall, Barnes type conservative signings and not some cheap, potentially high ceiling signing from abroad. Staveley said on several occasions that the club could not afford to make transfer mistakes.

eh? Thought the body language experts had established he had been hauled off?

Who's wrong?

He's faking it in shame of his performance. Gutless.

Now we've gotta go a month without him how do people think our depth at wing looks?

One player less

Bigger issue is him getting injured might still us letting Miggy go.

Well I very much would have signed another player instead of Barnes from the very beginning. Him getting injured sucks though.

Didn’t look right at all vs Bromley, this isn’t a surprise but it’s a pisser.  I like what the lad offers, I love his directness.

Shouldn’t impact it - he’s only out for a month, and Joelinton can certainly play LW if Gordon is out

Depends on how willock is feeling maybe big joe wing and miley comes in the middle in games later. If isak needs to come off and so does gordan it's a bigger reshuffle if osula can't be put in.

As much as anything, we need him to show some form to try and get a decent bit of money back for him in the summer and invest in areas of the team that we have fewer options in.

Agree with this and this isn't to suggest he's a bad player or it was a mistake buying him as I don't think it's either of those things. We bought him as a hedge against Gordon not being good enough thankfully Gordon paid off.

The issue we have with Harvey is he's an expensive player on good money who is only going to lose value, not a great profile when your ffp constrained.

I can understand the sentiment behind this, but he has actually contributed to the addition of 19 points since he joined, and thats despite being injured for half of last season, and being in and out this year.

That's silly like, he's very clearly an extremely useful member of the squad.

I think our run of excellent form has done him no favours from an impact point of view. Teams are tightening up and sitting deeper against us which allows him no space to do what he does best. He's also (despite being excellent at it) a bit of a one-trick pony, which isn't particularly difficult to defend against - show him down the line instead of letting him cut inside and you largely nullify his threat.

I still think he's a very good player but you can see why he spends so much time on the bench.
