Think it’ll be clear as day to the scouting group why the midfield options need refreshing in the next two windows.

Actually a match that Miley would have been good in given his passing abilities.

Thing is though - the physical bar for our midfielders is so high. Are we going to allow ourselves 2 CMs that aren’t super mobile?

I think to myself - Barkley would’ve been a nice pickup.  But we’ve not really looked at those types of transfers.  And would he have a position for us?

I thought he was good actually, and grew into the game. He’s improving in duels but the main thing he brings will always be this:

He’s a real upgrade on Burn in that LB/LCB role for our build up.

Thought he was decent if not spectacular. One misplaced pass early on and then spot on. Maybe would have liked a bit more from him as an attacking threat when it became apparent that our forwards couldn't finish their dinners, but not really his fault.

I don’t think you ask him to be our primary source of ball progression from the back 3 and then also ask him to provide threat in the final third. It wasn’t his role in the team yesterday to do that… you could see it was clearly Joelinton’s role to back up Barnes and provide overlaps. That’s very much a tactical decision from Howe.

Tough day at the office for him I felt after being awesome last week.

Not what I watched. Thought he played well and was comfortable throughout. Seemed to look gassed around 75mins so needs to work on his stamina.

Same. Thought he did well. Easy to forget his age too sometimes and even when he's not playing well he plays with great confidence on the ball.

Was pleasantly surprised by some of his defending yesterday. Positionally and simply not diving in and waiting for his chance to knick the ball. Great to see.

To be fair Barkley looked like in every way like an expensive disaster waiting to happen. Good on him for proving everyone wrong, and congrats to Villa for getting lucky that he hasn't ended up being a permacrock.

Thought his defending was better than his attacking tbh.

Barkley had a good season last time out and stayed fit.

Playing for Luton last year I doubt he’s on megabucks.

his first few games this season he’s looked a bit ropey from a defensive point of view, imo.  Last two game have been good, hopefully a sign of improvement, and he’s starting to understand that side is of the game better.

I genuinely think it'll have helped being alongside Dan Burn to be honest, for his experience and leadership. I know it probably adds difficulties to the role too.

He's a prospect for sure but also the decision to spend 35m on him and not strengthen areas were we needed more is a bit silly.

When we signed him out left back options where Dan Burn and Matt Ritchie

And Matt Targett who honestly feels like a better left back than he is. i know he might turn out to be great but right now he looks so raw.
