James Trafford: NUFC in talks with Burnley over £30m transfer (Various)

Genuinely excited about the potential of this.

It will show incredible depth in that position when in pre season we have 2 quality goalkeepers sharing game time.

I actually think it makes sense for Trafford to spend some time with Pope, so he can learn some of the things Pope is good at.

It also puts Pope in a position where if he drops a clanger or two, we've got quality ready to step in.

Hall had to learn a new position. I hope Trafford isn’t being bought as the second striker…

Left back? He played left back at Chelsea and we signed him to play at left back?

Hall was left out of the side because he wasn't yet doing to things Howe demanded of him. He said as much recently.

He was still very new to the position. Don’t know the context of the discussion tbh, just replying to this.

We should still get decent fees for Vlachodimos and to a  lesser extent  Dubravka..Matt Turner is going to Lyon for 7 million pounds from Forest

Dubravka’s 36 with one year left on his contract. Anything over a million and we’ve done well.

He's appeared in a grand total of 9 competitive club games in the last 3 seasons -- 1 for Benfica, 7 for Forest, and 1 League Cup sub appearance for us.

The only hope with Vlach is that we could get a non-loss Saudi fee based on his appearances for Greece. He played 10 90s for them in 2024.

Otherwise its pass the PSR parcel if another team is as desperate as we were last summer.

I think Howe treats each signing differently based on certain factors. He must have seen something that made him think Tonali would be ready for the league right from the start. He does have a high bar when it comes to it though, more often than not players have to wait.

And yet he couldn't get a run of games because of Sean Longstaff.

And we all kept pointing out how we were much better with Tonali in the side.

Trafford has to start number 1. I maintain you can’t bring in a GK for £30m, a position you can’t bring them on with 20 to go, and them just warm the bench. Especially one on the back of an absolute high of a season and full of confidence.

People will say Howe gets things correct, but he does get things wrong and not starting Trafford would be one.

We weren’t always a much better side with Tonali in it. Let’s not re-write history. Longstaff won his place back deservedly and results improved instantly in particularly our defensive record.

Tonali got the matches against the clubs where we were always likely to get few points, Longstaff came back in for him v Burnley at home (I think?), which was the start of an easy run of games. Pretty sure we could have given Tonali that run of games and the outcome would have been the same.

Are you talking about the Brentford, sheff united, Burnley and palace matches here? After the Man City, Liverpool and Brighton games?

I wonder why results improved [emoji38]

No I’m talking about the season before in particular against Brighton and West Ham.

If we’re signing him, we should be playing in straight away imo. If the idea is to have someone better with the ball on the floor to help change the way we play, then he’d be better playing before we get into September when there’s barely any time on the training ground with two games a week.
