Will Osula

The run he makes for the one on one he wastes is really good and he shows great pace.  Quite impressive that we've probably only seen him get space a handful times in his apps so far and he's been put through for a chance and also put in down the line for a goal.

In a more open game, he would look a lot better.  But he is still really raw and a bit wayward with some of his play.  So I do understand Howe being reluctant to give him more minutes.  I do think he offers far more than Gordon up top, mind.  But if Isak is coming off, it's usually going to mean we have a lead.  But in these cup games or God forbid, when Isak is missing.  I'd rather see him up top.

He's been a bit unlucky that in both games he's started he's been up against packed defences. Every time I was looking for him he was a lone presence in the box surrounded by defenders. You can definitely see he could be a handful even if he is a bit raw.

I'm sure he's not even properly set when he connects with the shot.

Thought the exact same thing, expected it to fly off to the corner flag

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to Osula
By now, Osula should’ve somehow realised what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about Osula now

And backbeat, the word is on the street that the fire in Osula’s heart is out
I'm sure Osula’s heard it all before, but Osula never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about Osula now

And all the roads Osula has to walk are winding
And all the lights that leads Osula there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to Osula
But I don't know how

Because maybe
Osula’s gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my Os-su-laaaa

Add that to the current one. We might just about fit both in during the minutes he’s usually on the pitch.

Unlucky not to draw a few fouls as appeared to be held a few times, chased and harried which for tired opposition being a nuisance is sometimes all you need to see out games. Hopefully trusted with more minutes this half half of the season as Isak needs protecting

Blackburn want him on loan apparently. Shame we can’t afford to let him go as that would be a good move imo.

Might as well let him go tbh.  Not like he ever plays anyway.

This feels Lewis Hall all over again. This time next year when Wilson’s gone and Osula’s banged in his 10th for the season we’ll all be saying “Eddie knows!” (And then moaning about why he bought “X” in the summer and isn’t playing him)

Not quite the same, Hall was really highly rated as a potential star player. Osula not so much.

And on the flip side, it's not like he's not being used when the first half dozen other eligible forwards are injured.

They keep saying good things about his application in training etc. (unlike Hall). And in the modern world he's not that expensive. I don't think there's too much to worry about in terms of where he's going with us. I'm pretty optimistic.

Yeah, it wasn’t a dig at him. Personally I can see why he isn’t coming on, he looks very raw still and almost too enthusiastic to the point he can lose possession very cheaply.

I knew :) I agree about losing possession etc, I think that's exactly why he's not been played much. We've had a weird season with, initially, a lot of close games and disappointing results, which I can see Howe not wanting to hoy him into. And then suddenly a winning streak where Eddie's understandably said he didn't want to interrupt much to let players establish their rhythm and keep things going.

The good thing is Osula looks like he's matured a decent amount already, judging by the (very small amount of) time we've actually seen him. He doesn't look like a reject given the reaction to his goal against Bromley.

I would be very suprised of we let him go on loan.

Surely Eddie wants him in and around training and the team this season.

Feels like letting him go would undo any work that had been put in so far

This. He’ll get minutes against Birmingham.

See Hall this season.

Putting Osula in to protect Isak is much more important than not putting in Osula because he's not ready.

We need a body, up front, that can come on for Isak when the game is won. Someone that isn't also important like Gordon who should also be protected to some degree.

If Howe values Osula's development ahead of Isak's fitness, we have a squad problem and that means we should go sign a 31yr old journeyman player 5a from abc FC in the championship for 1.5m to protect Isak when he doens't need to be on the pitch as an urgent priority.

Isak needs to be protected at all costs.

Ordinarily I'd probably agree. I've kept thinking about posting this but I'm not sure where or when to do it. But I'd be very interested to see what the input of Bunce is on our fitness decisions.

Particularly lately I've noticed some slightly odd looking decisions re: who is or isn't subbed/rested, and I've wondered if that's being influenced by his view on what the players can manage, or even if they're now receiving adjusted training levels. I remember an interview from him a while back where he said contrary to popular belief, he's sometimes saying players need to be worked harder to get the best out of them.

I could be misremembering, but I don't recall Murphy constantly being an early sub in previous seasons, but he is now, and I wonder if that's a factor in him keeping his form up.
