Isn't it mad that clubs are prepared to pay 50-odd million, rather than simply wait a year and get someone on a free?

It's basically saying that they value the player's impact, for a single season, as being worth at least that. Which could only make sense if that one player was going to be the difference between trophy/not, or CL/not.

Craziness.

But you have to guarantee that its your club he'll come to when hes "free" and have a contingency for that year and being "free" means probably higher wages which drives up the wages at your club.

Yeah its mad not to just wait.

40/45 million and it’s a cracking deal imo. Think he will go to Liverpool late in the window or for free next summer though.

They've probably already given him a nudge ala Trent to Real Madrid.

Not that Liverpool would ever do that of course.

I wonder if he has a deal with Liverpool to sign for them next season on a free

More than likely.  They've probably done the despicable Real Madrid move on Palace.

I'm sure the Liverpool fans will be fuming about how underhand it is.

If we're gonna sell Isak (looking likely) we need to be looking at agreements such as letting us have the free run at Guehi (if we do really want him) as well as getting max value possible for Isak.

That won't work if Guehi doesn't want us to have the free run at Guehi

Agreed. Obviously only if we knew he wanted the move.

I have about 3% confidence in the club after this summer tbh. The last 4 windows inclusive of this one have been a shambles.

From what I’ve read, it seems as if Guehi is going to Liverpool.  Apparently Liverpool and Konate are still far apart in contract discussions and  Real Madrid are keen.  Usually Madrid would wait to sign him on a free but Alonso wants to play 3 at the back and apparently they are light on centre halves.  I am guessing whether Guehi moves this summer or next depends on what Madrid decide to do.

Martin Hardy:

Newcastle United are set to revive their interest in the Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi as they look to turn around what has so far been a disastrous transfer window.

Newcastle do not want to spend more than £40million on the England centre half, and they could leave it late in the transfer window to make their move, to keep the price down, with Palace still asking for £50million.

Liverpool are also interested but do not want to pay such a high fee for a player who is now in the final 12 months of his contract.
