We'd have said that about Clark when he was playing too. But not just Premier League players are involved here so where do we draw the line? 

 

"It makes sense to run your contract down in the Championship to maximise your pay, but not in the Prem"? Doesn't make any sense. Then what about Ligue 1? La Liga? Eredivisie? What about if a Sunderland player's contract runs out between promotion and relegation again, do they count as Championship or PL? Then you get to not all teams being the same size in each league, so a league rule makes no sense anyway. Plus not all players at any team get the same pay.

 

Basically, you can't draw a line within a continuum without looking silly, especially when the teams making up that continuum aren't static themselves within it.

 

Even pointing out individuals who will 'definitely' be OK like TAA, aside from that being ridiculous as shown above, well why should they have to leave tens of millions on the table out of some altruistic idealism, ceding a massive portion of their value to a multi billion pound corporation? Fuck that.

Really not arsed about this one. That armband craic this season was poor.. good player or not, there’s a huge question mark over whether he’d be a good fit or not.

 

If we did sign him you can guarantee that question will get asked of the manager at the next press conference.

If we have made an offer, then the player has already said yes. Thats how it works nowadays

Nowadays players are sounded out through ‘intermediaries’ long before clubs get to the stage of putting actual bids in.

 

If we had of agreed a fee with Palace it’s almost certain he would have signed IMO.

Running down his deal is wise, but still a gamble. Doesn’t get injured, or dropped by Palace as season goes on, he could end up commanding a £10m+ signing on fee, or very high wages due to no fee.

 

If he is dropped / injured, there’s a strong chance he doesn’t go World Cup and suddenly his stock is looking very low. Where the top sides are probably looking elsewhere for the associated wages he’d cost. 
 

Might be a ploy to get Palace to sell at a lower value, especially if Glasner tells Parish he could end up being benched.

I'm not sure. If he'd pushed for the move I'm sure Palace would have let him go. I think he wasn't that fussed at all.

All I remember is an interview where he was, to say the least, non-committal about a move. That’s not usual for a player who’s keen on it. My immediate thought was ‘he’s not that bothered’ so I don’t want him to sign.

Being dropped just tanks his value. If they are desperate for £30m - cool.  
 

Unless he gets a major injury that rules him out for most of the following season - he’s getting a massive contract at a new club.

I’m hopeful that we’ve moved on already. The talk so far seems to be speculation based on our interest last summer, rather than leaks of bids. I find it hard to believe we spent the whole season assessing what went wrong last summer and decided to walk back into this swamp.

Not always. The agent would’ve said yes and then engineer a deal with another club/s and tell his client look what’s on offer…

 

It’s why clubs particularly us don’t like diving in as it gets used as a benchmark for other clubs to then match/improve.

Trafford came up during those discussions with Chelsea, I think if he was going there he would have been going at the same time so he could go to the CWC.
