Happy to be corrected here, but my recollection is we'd been linked with Elanga for 18-24 months prior to him actually signing and the only other serious link for a right winger last summer was Mbuemo, it leaked he was going to Man U and then we went and bought Elanga.

In retrospect we could have gleaned that the only summer signing we seemingly got early and unopposed would indeed be absolutely chod as everyone else had him sussed as not worth £55m in a month of Sundays.

Yes, if we go back all these years then you are correct. Going into last summer transfer window he was close to the top of the list.

I was responding to duo's post saying he was Eddie's number 1 target and he wasn't, not even in the summer gone. 'Close to the top of the list' is another matter, but I wasn't responding to that.

If we wanted Mbuemo but couldn’t get him - surely the next 2/3 players on the list are of the same profile and not someone who is the polar opposite?

That being said - there was no ground work done imo (talk to agents, get the nod for these signings to go ahead) - we made things up as we went along in the summer

Yeah. Gordon was our original RW choice, who then ended up playing LW, we've bid for Olise, were in for Mbeumo, owned and were forced to sell Minteh. We also bid for Maddison and were heavily linked with Szoboszlai for that inverted RW playmaker role.

Like I say, the transfer on its own is worth scrutinising but he wasn't Howe’s first choice by any means.

Elanga has been very high up on the RW list. No two ways about it.

Szoboszlai was always meant as one for our midfield three. Olise was a pipe dream. I don’t even think we made an official bid for him. At least not what I remember reading from anyone reliable. Don’t think Maddison would have played there either if we had gone hard for him. Mbeumo yeah, fair enough.

Either way, even if he had a player or two higher on his list than Elanga it doesn’t make it right to sign him because we missed out on another player. Extremely limited player who had the the absolute perfect setup for him at Forest built around his strengths and where there was tons of space and runs to make in straight lines.

He has no first touch or footballing IQ as a 50m player and for where we want to go - he’s a waste of money and we are stuck with him - that’s the reality

As I've just said to nufc123, I was responding to duo who said he was Eddie's number 1 target. Never denied he wasn't high on the list, more that there were plenty of players we went for before him.

He has ZERO footballing fundamentals on any technical level.

There will never be a good player in there.

He’s utterly woeful.

But we're not really stuck with him though are we. Someone took a punt on Chris Wood, Shelvey, Riviere etc. Just because a player doesn't fit a team doesn't mean no one else will steer way clear

He was a really good player at Forest. So we know that’s not true. The difference is Howe. If we bring in a top manager we will get some mileage out of him.

Nah. He’s fucking dreadful. His inability to trap a ball, cross a ball or be of any use without the ball means there is ZERO chance he can ever be useful on any sustainable level and that’s not on Howe. The scouting is but this is like we’ve signed his retarded twin brother.

He’s a fucking embarrassment. Woeful.

I always give players (and managers) time, but I said early on with Elanga that I couldn't see what we (Eddie?) had seen in him. He surrenders possession as much as Murphy, has a poor first touch, and was regularly on his heels, meaning he's beaten to a ball played into his feet by the defender marking him.

These are all basics and shouldn't need to be coached into a professional footballer in his early twenties.

He's got pace and his delivery isn't bad (although it's detoriated lately with loss of confidence) but Murphy has both of those.

Tried to be behind him as much as possible this season but my fucking word, he’s absolutely appalling. How those in charge thought that he could be the big RW upgrade…Christ. One of the poorest players for us I’ve ever seen.

He's a downgrade on Miggy.

We spent circa 52m which hurts our accounts - we are stuck because we can’t afford to count him as a loss - it’s a big problem in the next few years or maybe longer

He's an incredibly limited player that could be a threat if he is put in specific positions and is given a basic set of instructions to follow.

We don't seem to have any sort of plan to try and get anything productive out of him. The players are just out there doing whatever.

This is a player that struggles to pick out a pass and keep possession in tight spaces, and most of that game both Tonali and Tino were crowding the right wing and bringing their defenders with them, which meant he had no space to even try to run at his man and just put a ball in the box often enough like you ideally want, and instead he was then trying to do the things you never want him to do, which is get involved in any type of intricate link up play.

On the other side the opposite was happening with Barnes. Who wasn't getting enough support from other players to work one-twos with to help him get by Jimenez. He was instead afforded all kinds of space to run at Jimenez 1 on 1, which Barnes is not good at, and he just kept getting the ball taken off him.

There just doesn't seem to be a good enough tactical plan to get the most out of the players who are not good enough to just put out there and expect them to figure things out. This is ultimately going to get Howe in big trouble.

If we sit deep and just hit teams on the counter then he can be an asset, as that is how Forest got the best out of him but we almost never play that way so it's looking a more and more strange signing

Rayan looked levels above him on the pitch

Tbh, that Forest team made Wood look an England striker. If was like a Bruce team on steroids.

Cost about half the price
