Not what we offer he’s not.

Well obviously, but the aim is clearly to negotiate from there.

If they said “no, and he’s not even for sale at £80m”, I doubt we’d bother perusing it.

There’s obviously a price, but whether it’s one we can get to is another matter.

Fair enough but reports are saying Forest won’t even consider talking unless a bid of at least £60m is tabled, I mean he has 3 years left on his contract yet so far apparently we’ve only bid around £45m, I mean come on. Annoying thing is I think there’s no doubt he’ll want to come as we’ve hit CL twice in last three years etc.

I’d take all the reports with a pinch of salt. It depends which side they’re coming from as to what spin is put on it.

As Eddie said following the Guehi saga last year, the numbers quoted were a load of shite. If two clubs are genuinely in negotiations (not actually sure if that’s the case here tbf), then there has to be a realistic belief on both sides that an acceptable number can be reached.

He's not worth £45 million, never mind £60 million. I would certainly hope we have moved on and looking at other options currently

Not sure what makes him 60m

What does that make Barnes or Gordon worth then?

I mean Murphys age doesn't help him, but I'm sure his numbers were better than Elanga over the season.

He's definitely worth £45m, young English winger who's just had a brilliant season.

Just checked last season Murphy had 2 goals more but that was Murphy best by far (8 goals and 12 assists last season) but every other Murphy’s are way worse (around 3 goals and 6 assists last season, 4 and 2 season before) where last 2 seasons elangles have been consistent (6 and  11 then 6 and 10). It seems what we’ll get is a Murphy slightly lower than his best but consistently.

Yeah Murphy had a special season in terms of assists and goals. I agree he needs to be a back up player though

Me £35 at a push £40 million

Forrest don't want to sell so if we want him sadly we'll have to pay a premium - for 60 mil though I would rather we tried for Xavi Simons (if he'd come) as there's a far bigger potential upside

In your opinion fair enough, not in mine

You’re not going to find a better RW than Elanga for less than £50m+ like, even abroad. Have you not seen the fees being quoted for some absolute bang average footballers this summer?

I’d also hazard a guess that Howe thinks he can make Elanga better too and the evidence is there with players he’s improved at the club already.

This is a massive sweeping statement. I’m very much sure there are better wingers than Elanga for less than £50m.

Identifying them is the hard part and a risk we may not want to take.  But to act like it’s impossible isn’t right.

He never said it’s impossible- he said “you’re never going to find a better one” and he’s probably right. He’s definitely right about the prices - to say he’s worth around £35m to £40m is just wrong, I mean that’s what Sunderland are buying and selling some at, we can’t say Sunderland’s signings are shit as their buying bargain buys then say we expect to get Elanga at £35m.

We’ll agree to disagree on that one. Although maybe I should have said you’re not going to find a “better signing for us”, rather than “better RW” in general.

Elanga is about as close to a guaranteed “good signing” as you’re going to get for what we need at this point in time.

Raw ability / attributes

Premier League experience

Easy to integrate into squad

Off the back of a great season

High ceiling to improve further under Howe

Great attitude / personality

Extensively scouted and been interested in for the last 3 windows

Likely to come in and perform well straight away

There’s certainly no one else who ticks as many boxes as that available for less than £50m. There might be some players available for cheaper who tick some of the boxes and may tick those boxes in the future, but IN MY OPINION, we want / need players to come in and perform straight away.

I'm actually coming around on this one based largely on his personality and attitude.  Still think we need someone who can unlock a defence but maybe we can look at getting that in an Isak cover / no.10 style player.

I think he will be canny, doesn't make 60m reasonable though
