I was around at the time and have absolutely no idea what 'Oldham 96' means. Maybe it's because I'm forgetful or maybe it's cause, you know, I actually have a life and haven't addled my brain with endless minutiae drawn from old football matches! Players just didn't know what to do with the ball even given all the time in the world on it. From what I saw, it looked like we were patient with it, knowing that the opportunity would come eventually. And once in front and Wimbledon still just sat back we were more than happy to just play out the game and go through without exerting ourselves

ExiledGeordie
Blimey Willock had a shocker didn’t he😂 Dull as dishwater, slow to move the ball, awful passing and the midfield non existent in the first half but I enjoyed being back in the Gallowgate. Got through which is the main thing. Edited October 1 by ExiledGeordie

We played Oldham in the league cup in 1996 a few days after beating Man Utd 5-0, playing pretty much a full strength side, and we won 1-0 through a Beardsley FH penalty

midds
To have so much of the ball with so much time and so much space and create so little is more than a bit concerning I can't lie. To need a pen to get past a league 2 side and barely working their keeper all night is very unimpressive. I know it's only the cup and the result is the only thing that matters but it's still a really poor show tbh. Never carved them open all night despite having about 85% of the ball but a win's a win

christ
The thing we all know about cup games against lower league opposition is that they’re always representative of wider trends, hence the reason we won the league that season we battered Morcambe 7-0 under Bruce. The whole starting midfield tonight are poor technically in possession, don’t think our wide players are particularly creative, or composed, needs a real change in philosophy from Howe on the type of player he wants. The fact we wanted Elanga in the summer before even getting into the fee they wanted rang alarm bells for me, just more of the same all pace and power with no craft. Dr Venkman
That was such a strange experience. The game was incredibly boring, there was never any threat and the image looked like old Charlie Chaplin footage because of the frame rate.

But I remembered his Bournemouth teams having far more competent ball players. Not big names by any means. Just players that were a bit more composed and creative on the ball. HaydnNUFC
Through to the next round, they never really troubled, but that was an awful watch, like. Seem to struggle to create chances against anyone.

They’re clearly a well drilled and organised team who tried to hang into the game as long as possible. I swear some people go on as if this isn’t typical of a lot of early cup round games every year. Remember the multiple games against Stevenage for example

Abacus
Thought it was a pretty professional performance, so in a minority here. Comfortable win, controlled the game and some good minutes for the likes of Osula. I don't think anyone should expect to steamroller a lower league team in a cup tie. Not the most exciting watch, agreed, but actually quite enjoyed it anyway for getting the job done with no drama. Edited October 1 by Abacus
