Newcastle United vs. Arsenal [EFL Cup]: 05/02/25 @ 20:00 (SkySports)

First goal is huge because nerves could be a serious problem if they score first, and score first early. Think if we score first its over though. On a personal note I'm really looking forward to getting back to SJP again!

Annoying that we’ve had a month, during which time our form has dipped, instead of the usual two weeks. Slight things like that always seem to go against us, though most fans probably think that about their own club.

It's a game where we can defend without feeling guilty about it.

So long as we have the pace of Gordon and Isak they won't be able to rest.

I think this is totally in our hands, just ensure we don't concede early and make it awkward and we will then attack them.

I would like to see both Botman and Pope back for this, not sure what other changes will be feasible to make, my feeling is Arteta will rotate his team around so that might be in our favor too.

I’d imagine Willock will be playing in place of Joelinton as well. Murphy on the counter, too.

Plenty of pace in the forward areas and we won’t be wide open like City every time we attack. You’d like to hope we won’t gift them chance after chance from individual mistakes either.

Joelinton has been shite recently but these are his games IMO.

Id have Pope and Botman in though.

I was more meaning the fact he came off with a knee injury and is now wearing a locking knee brace.

Could just be a precaution, of course. But he surely won’t be anywhere near full fitness with such a quick turnaround.

It will be Longstaff if Joelinton isn’t fit enough to play.

Is the ticketing system working?

Could someone put their ticket back into resale and let me know the exact second they do.

Why not cut out the middleman?

The huge drop in form for Hall and Tino bothers me most for this one. They were excellent against Arsenal last 2 times, we need them keeping whatever Arsenal throw down the wings kept quiet.

Can't see it.  He has barely been getting a look in of late and he is awful on the left.  His last game against Barrow he was our worst player by miles.

You can't move Bruno to the left.  As he doesn't have the legs to cover Gordon/Hall and won't link up down that flank in the same way Willock can, or at least used to.

I reckon Arsenal will come out with a concerted plan to try and get Newcastle players carded/sent off.

Yeah they will. I fully expect the narrative that Oliver is a Newcastle fan to ramp up on the next few days as well.

They are a dirty club, and the way they are acting over Haalands’s stay humble comment after yesterday is just showing it.

I do think though that they could possibly get frustrated if we keep them out long enough, and end up losing their cool.

Clutching at straws?  Possibly.  Am I nervous as fuck already about Wednesday?  Yes.  But I didn't get the dread and fear I was expecting after yesterday's game.  Especially considering they won 5-1.

First goal is a defensive fuck up from City.  Admittedly they should then score again from another defensive/goalkeeping blunder.  But after that, I thought City were the better side and Raya makes two top saves at 1-0.  City then deservedly get it back to 1-1.

Second goal Foden plays a ridiculous pass and they get a massive slice of luck with the deflection.

The third is appalling goalkeeping.  This place would have a meltdown if that was Dubravka or Pope   and rightly so.

Fair fucks.  The 4th is a great counter and goal.  City their usual wide open selves at the back.

The 5th I think is bad from the keeper and all.  Not much pace on it and not that far away when it goes past him.  Just waves it away into the corner.  Looked like an outfield player playing in nets all night.

That didn't feel like a 5-1 game for a good hour and Arsenal were very open by their standards.  We won't be as gung ho and light at the back as City were.

Need to set up strongly in defence or else they will run away with it. Need a back 5 with Pope in net.

It is a bit of a conundrum.  Do we stick or twist?  All the cliches about 2-0 being a dangerous scoreline apply.

Not sure I'd want us going with a back 5 and defending from the off, mind.  Especially as Howe has barely done that from the start since, what, his first season?  He seems wedded to his 4-3-3 and I think we'll just play this like we often do against Arsenal at SJP.  The last two meetings have been incredibly tight, with neither side creating much.

I think Botman and Pope should come in, mind.  As I think they'll be reverting back to Set Piece FC for this.

We just need to set up that we don't get hit on the counter at any time, that seems to be where we are leaking most goals.

They will need to go all out attack and hopefully that opens up some space for the midfield trio on Isak.

Would not be surprised to see Burn back at LB on Wednesday and Trippier RB.

yep, bang on. We don’t seem to concede much by letting a team break us down, rather it’s this ass everyone is up the pitch and we invite it upon ourselves.
