Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle United - 19/04/2025

Recommended Posts

Our midfield which is usually so dominant was way off it. As Terrymac said both Bruno and Joey having very bad games left us exposed. Isak didn't have a sniff either.

Hoping Man City do us a favour Tuesday, probably best for them to win I fully expect them to ease into 3rd spot next few weeks so hoping Villa, Chelsea and Forest drop points wherever possible. We're all Spuds fans Monday ,👀😬

Villa had to win whereas a result for Newcastle would've been a bonus. Great manager, vocal support and a battle hardened and embittered side(towards Newcastle probably and after midweek) all played a part. There's a reason managers are paid handsomely and yesterday showed why.

Positives are no injuries, an ideal fixture next week to negotiate. Get Howe back hopefully and go all out for next 3 games that are all winnable.

People are saying we played poorly, and it's true, we did play poorly but I think a lot are underestimating just how good Villa were at pressing us into mistakes and just essentially shutting us down. Playing poorly when in excellent form and meeting one of the best teams in the best division isn't a coincidence, they carved out chance after chance and stopped us from doing what poorer teams couldn't do.

There's a decent chance that PSG go on and win the CL but even they lost at Villa just a few days before we did. Villa look the real deal unfortunately and they had they quality and freshness on the bench. No surprise that they clicked it up another gear as soon as the subs came on, their energy changed the game and they scored 2 quick ones to wrap it up and make it look easy

I thought it was a combination of Villa's quality, our fatigue and our tactical approach that did for us in the second half.

One to take on the chin and move on from. Wednesday meant that this was a bit of a free hit. We need to do the business v Ipswich and I'm sure we will.

Missed the game, caught glimpses on catch up and just seems a big L.

Think it shows the lack of depth our squad has, because whilst they can be great and on it, when it’s the same XI each game it doesn’t get the opposition thinking and they know how to work on to play against us.

Badly need some good signings this summer so we can mix it up and keep opposition guessing.

Doesn’t change much to our chances of Europe, win the home games we get top 5. Especially if we can load up on our GD against Ipswich by +4.

Would happily just take any sort of win against Ipswich

Same as the one away to Southampton after that horrible defeat to Bournemouth. A messy unimpressive win against a terrible side will do fine.

I’ve no doubt by the time window closes in the summer we’ll be in the stronger position. We appear to be in a great position to spend. They done a ton on wages for temporary signings

Yeah qualify for Champions League and fancy us to be in the stronger position next season.

Results are always all that matter, really, but at this stage of the season it's particularly true. Positive trends, team chemistry, xG, performances - whatever metrics your want to use to forecast long-term success - are secondary to just getting over the line. We've put in some very, very hard yards this season - they've earned the right to win ugly if that's what it takes.

We really missed Howe.

What do you think Howe would have done differently out of interest?

specifically in terms of mentality I think Howe would help a tonne. When players like Bruno and Schar go head’s gone he’d be there sorting them out.

After that we don’t know what else Howe brings in terms of tactical detailing but I think it’s obvious that we’d be better off with him there isn’t it?

I guess he could have calmed them down a bit but I'm not sure he'd have made much difference.

It's not like we played any different to how we would have if Howe was there and he can't magically produce a better subs bench than we had yesterday.

Just think we can say we were beaten by the better team

Not sure in terms of specifics, but when you come up against someone as good as Emery, you miss your manager. Not only for the game but for the build up as well.

we were definitely beaten by the better team on the day but I think it’d be a bit daft to think that having the manager wouldn’t make any/much of a difference really.

Like I say tactically we don’t know how much input all of the staff have but we were miles off them everywhere. Of course there are various reasons for this but it’s hard for me to imagine Howe setting us up that badly and persisting with it through the full 90 without really changing anything. We were very lucky it was only 4 - could easily have been really embarrassing.

How would Villa fare if they didn’t have Emery for few weeks? After a handful of winnable matches they march up to city or Newcastle away? That would absolutely be some factor. Fatigue aside. Results may still even out but the manager is in that position and role for a reason.

It's not the in-game management so much that we would've missed, but the preparation beforehand, and his ability to fire the players up. He's clearly a great motivator and you are going to miss that big-time in a crunch game against a Villa team who were playing like it was their biggest game of the season.

Not saying it would've changed the result, but I bet we would have put up more of a fight.

The press hype over Villa after this is absurd. Well done, you beat us when we're missing our manager, had hardly any rest, and with squad options we can only dream of.

They're a good team, to be fair, and have been in excellent form for a good while now. I think they'll beat City tbh.

Most people questioned their loan signings in January, but they've turned out to be extremely astute.
