I think with the likes of Pedro and Ekitike long gone (players of indisputable quality), I don't think our approach is necessarily as straightforward as 'one to replace Wilson' and 'one to replace Isak.' We might not necessarily be aiming to reflect a situation where one striker is the very obvious first choice, supported by an inferior understudy.

It's impossible to replace Isak's quality, but incredibly easy to replace Wilson's. The result is probably getting two quite evenly matched strikers who will compete against each other for top billing. That's why Jackson and Wissa kinda makes sense as a pair I suppose, though undermined by the AFCON thing.

Bottom line is, I think people need to stop expecting us to get 'an Isak replacement'. We're replacing the whole strikers' unit.

agree with all of this.

it would still be Ollie Watkins for me. I know all of the PSR points and resale value etc etc. but he’d give us the best chance of replacing Isak’s goal return imo.

Fuck it, going to quote myself.

There’s no immediate replacement for Isak. It will have to be two players replacing his goals and ideally getting a few more.

Gordon/Barnes--------Wissa/Osula--------Elanga/Murphy

Joelinton/Ramsey------Bruno G/Miley

Tonali/Bruno G

Hall/Targett-----Botman/Burn-----Thiaw/Schär-----Livramento/Trippier

Ramsdale/Pope

Backups: Lascelles, Krafth, Willock

If you sign Wissa, I think you'll be fine for top 6 again.

Would still need another ST and possibly another CM.

Plenty of scope for him to sign for us over the weekend :pow:

Yeah, if I was betting I still think we get him. But it's dragged on for two months, and there are still quite a few things which need to fall in place. Since we sat on the Trafford deal thinking it was in place I don't take these things for granted. Liverpool might decide they need an experienced striker at the last minute for example.

this is why I hate football governance right now. The easiest answer for us is sign Watkins.

Still plenty of scope for this to go wrong then. Unless we are ready to give them whatever they want in order to get an agreement.

There is, but all indications are suggesting hes coming here.

An upgrade on Osula would be ideal, yeah.

If Willock can stay fit, he's another good CM/AM option. Ramsey is a similar profile. Howe seems to really like energetic midfielders who can press and carry the ball.

A replacement for Isak is what we need.

Willock can’t stay fit which is the issue but on the left side we now have Joelinton and Ramsey so I’m happy with that. We ideally need a Longstaff replacement who can 6/8 who is capable of giving Tonali and/or Bruno a rest.

Think Wissa would have been perfect in the Wilson role spelling Isak. Small chance it still happens of course.

He could also play that role behind a different star striker if we were to get one and sell Isak.

He's probably also good enough to lead the line as our main CF if we get a talented younger guy in who needs a year's seasoning.

I like Osula but I suspect his best role will be coming on as an agent of chaos last 15/20 mins where his pace and tricks against tiring defenders might make things happen. I doubt Wissa/Osula up front will be enough on it's own, unless he just goes full Lewis Hall and becomes quality of course.

Wissa is the replacement though. I don't think he'll be a backup player. He's a good stopgap for 2-3 seasons while reassessing the ST market.

Wissa is the Wilson replacement.

Any other theory is nonsense.

Brentford know we are desperate so I've got no doubt we'll end up paying more than we initially wanted but we've not got much choice at this point, really need to get him in and not only just to get another body in.

A player who scored 19 PL goals last season is not moving clubs to play as a backup. Who is this mythical Isak replacement that you're going to sign?

The ST market is weak at present. Most of the high profile ST options this summer have moved clubs. Osimhen, Gyokeres, Sesko, Ekitike, David, etc.

There aren't many options out there who could replace Isak directly. That's why Newcastle are now shopping around for the likes of Wissa.

Wissa is currently the Wilson replacement, given we still have Isak.

If Isak leaves and we sign Wissa and another, they become the replacements for Isak and Wilson. Why are people making so much of this?

Right. So if Isak leaves and we can't get anyone else in, is Wissa on the bench and coming on for the last ten mins of every game?

He might be the squad replacement long-term. In the short-term, though, on the pitch, he replaces Isak this season.
