It’ll require some top play from Wissa over the next couple of seasons for him to be looked at as a good buy, the whole point of getting him over a promising young player was that he wouldn’t need a season to get up to speed like a raw, younger player with a bit more potential and the ever exciting resale value you love to see in a signing.

Mitigating circumstances with the injury and all that of course, but best case scenario seems to be we’ll have spent huge money on a solid PL player who is about to be on the wrong side of 30 and likely falling off in terms of quality.

A cracking season next year where he is the difference between us making or missing the CL would basically cover it, mind you. I do wonder if he’ll even be seen as the first choice striker going into next season though.

To be fair expecting anything out of him Vs man city is madness.

If anything this is the game you drop him, throw on all the pace and rely on counters.

Must be absolutely lost out there. Game passing him by. Ive barely seen him! Not his fault. I agree it would have been a good game for a rest. They must not be convinced of Joes fitness

The good news is that he no longer looks like a square peg in a round hole playing up front in this system

The bad news is that he now looks like a hexagon peg in a rhomboid hole playing in midfield

Woltemade has 10 goals for Newcastle this season but it would appear his immediate future will be in midfield.

‘Even when he's playing as a No.9, as we used him, it wasn't to stretch the line,’ said Howe, speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League second leg play-off tie against Qarabag, in which his side lead 6-1.

‘The role was to come lower on the pitch. Nick is very happy playing the role that he has done the last few games, there’s no fight with him on that. He's very much all in because he wants to showcase his best skills and his best skills are technically helping us link play. He does have a freedom on the ball to take up central positions and to drift to a degree across the pitch, so he’s not in a stranglehold by the position in one place.

‘The future's exciting regardless of which position he plays in. The hardest season for any new player from a different country is always going to be the first one. Nick had a great start but there was always going to be a period where he found it difficult, where teams were desperate to stop him.

'Nick was always in our thoughts as very much a deep-lying player, a deep-lying number nine. All his best work came from starting higher and coming lower. Now, just starting lower and staying in the middle line, I don’t think is a great change. I’ve been very impressed with him.’

We're not getting another striker in the summer, unless it's an Osula replacement or Wissa's massive weight can be shifted. There's far more pressing squad deficiencies to consider

Ironically a pressing striker is one of the things we've lacked this season, unless Gordon plays there.

That's Gordon's position to lose for the rest of the season imo, let's see if Wissa can offer enough to step in there to lighten the load

Sorry if this sounds cynical, but why on earth should we care about maximizing his chances of going to the World Cup as Germany’s No.9? Are his chances better if we bench him instead of playing him in midfield? The only thing on Howes mind is to maximize our chances of winning football games, as it should be.

I agree to a point, I have no idea about who else is his competition for the no.9 spot in the national side if he ends up being a deeper midfield/ play maker and doesn't add much in the way of goals is he at risk of dropping out of favour internationally?

As much as I don't like how negative No Hope is in general he has maintained Big Nick seems the solution to someone else's problem, if we aren't ever going to move away from 4-3-3 and adopt a no.10 he may well fail here longer term (as an out and out no.9)

We have however 1. got to do what's best for the club, 2.make do with that we have, 3. try and look for alternatives when the original position wasn't working.

Misfiring wingers, general dip in key players form this season and being new to the league and thrown right in the deep end with minimal or next to no training time has also contributed

I guess if I am also being cynical if he has a good world cup and we do decide to part ways it will help maintain his value and list of potential suitors.

You could make arguments for all of our front 3 being moved on and looked at again out of the 3 we have I actually want him to work the most.

Eddie is going to do what's best for the team, but you could understand if Woltemade was a bit apprehensive how it will be viewed in Germany.

We need to demonstrate to talented young players that they can achieve their international aspirations with us. It's an entirely fair question, just stained by the tabloid presentation.

Eddie's job is to get results for us, yeah, but that includes managing things like this. He has to manage his players and keep them happy. If this is a legitimate worry for Woltemade, then Eddie has to address it.

But Howe didn’t say he was converting him to a midfielder, did he? I thought he said he always saw him as a deeper-lying forward?

It’s not really anything like Joelinton.
