Newcastle United vs. PSV Eindhoven: 21/1/26 @ 20:00 (TNT Sport)

Recommended Posts

I'd be looking forward to a Europa league game more than domestic games at the moment nevermind CL.  The Kyiv game in 97 with nothing to play for is the only one I haven't had a buzz for, even then looked forward to a nothing riding on yet still out of the ordinary game.

I'm looking forward to it of course, and my gratitude to Howe and everyone else who's got us here is boundless, but the anticipation is diluted because it doesn't feel like there's that much riding on it and I'm anxious about the cumulative impact on the players/season. Last time we were in I was buzzing days in advance and was very distracted on the day of the games.

Can't see the point in qualifying for the CL if you're not going to enjoy the games. And I love that travelling fans from all over get to come to the Toon and hopefully take away a good impression of the city and stadium. I mean, not so much the French fans, but everyone else.

Absolute nailed on confident we’ll win this like 3-0.

Full on press and they won’t cope. Basically a cup final mentality where we know one win cements us at worse a home 2nd tie KO tie.

Team prediction:

Pope: Miley, Thaiw, Botman, Hall: Joelinton, Bruno G, Ramsey: Gordon, Wissa, Elanga

This is what Wissa joined for, so for Christ sake it should be a star performance from him :D

If the plan is full on in your face pressing, would go agree with your team having our quickest front three have a go at them.

If we being a bit more cautious, which I hope we aren't, then would swap Gordon for Barnes and which will suit a counter attacking approach more.

Agree with Tonali on the bench. At some point in the near future, could the real Tonali please stand up. ffs

I just try to approach them as complete one-offs against interesting teams we rarely play. I accepted a while back that I was never going to enjoy them otherwise because of how little each one actually matters in the grand scheme of things.

I actually enjoyed the Marseille game.

Hate how I'm not expecting nothing but another subdued midweek atmosphere and a performance to match it, pretty depressing really...suppose it's keeping with the general feeling on here at the moment

I'm expecting (hoping) the players will turn up, along with the crowd and come out of the traps hard and fast and get right into these from the off. It's our house :indi:

Feel quite comfortably confident in line with the Sir Bobby game. Was no real logical reason for that either but it transpired that way. Am always surprised how close it was scoreline-wise, never thought we'd not win it.

Not much riding on it? Don't we pretty much need a win for a decent shot at getting through to the next stage?

I think even as a competition it's been exciting. No guarantees we even make the Play-Offs if we lose on Wednesday, very good chance of automatic qualification if we win.

I don’t think so.

It’s been a while since it’s been discussed in detail. But I’m sure based on the fixtures and who plays who. We don’t have much chance of finishing top 8.

Yet supposedly we are all but through to the play-offs in some capacity. Based on some model similar to Opta.

Unless I’ve imagined all this

In theory the higher you finish from 9th to 24th should give you an easier game and a home tie 2nd leg of the play off? So guessing winning this should give us a better chance of getting top 16 at least which will get us the home leg 2nd?

If I am wrong please correct me someone..

Honestly even the play-offs should be something to look forward to. The Carabao cup is more or less gone, the FA Cup is another tough one, the CL qualification looks unlikely. I want to give the play-offs everything we've got, don't really understand why people wouldn't be looking forward to it.

I think the excitement of the CL is muted slightly by the understanding that we have no chance of actually winning it as currently constructed. The individual games are still fun, but it lacks that little bit of hope that it may lead to something bigger.

Your theory is absolutely correct.

However it looks so densely packed (at least from 9th-20th) that it could just end up being a bit of a lottery as to how difficult your playoff opponent is.

So just like the Premier League, plus many more games and minus the fun.

For the PL there’s a tangible and achievable goal that will have a dramatic impact on the future of the club (CL qualification), so it’s very different.

We're already guaranteed a play off spot even if we lose against both PSV and PSG. Fighting for prize money, a favourable tie in the next round and the remote possibility of reaching the top 8

Looking forward I this, still very much of the kind of you can’t look forward to a home game against a biggish European team who’ll bring a full allocation at home then you probably won’t look forward to much it anything.

No idea if they’re as good as their league form suggests but you’d imagine it’ll be a good open game as Bosz can’t play any other way.

Qualifying for the CL via the PL only to end up where we are now - in the CL with a chance of the latter stages - which is muted for you.
