[LCSF 2nd leg] Manchester City vs. Newcastle United (2-0 agg.): 4/2/26 @ 20:00 (Sky Sports)

So many reasons to give up, 2-0 down, playing away from home, even if we're winning come the second half they can swap their entire team out for a second string that would beat most teams in Europe, but I honestly think we play our best football when we're up against it, when we're not expected to do well, unless it's in the league that is. I fancy us to at least make a game of this and I know for damn sure that Howe will put out his strongest team possible and will have a plan to win it, it's not over until it's over and we're so close to the chance of another cup.

Can't help feel we should be giving the second string a run out here and resting our main players only bringing them on later if there's something to defend/play for.

Not a popular view I know but we've just come off the back of PSG Away and Liverpool Away. Upcoming Brentford and Spurs in the PL are essentially must win if we want to save our PL season and then we've got CL after that.

At some point you have to accept you can't give 100% every game with this schedule and prioritise. Starting 2 down away to Man City doesn't sound like the time for it.

This for me. Pointless burning out our players for a lost cause. We have enough of a squad we should be able to change things up a bit without resorting to second string completely.

You don’t chuck a semifinal 2nd leg at just 2-0 down. I get the odds are against us but you don’t give up your trophy without a fight.

We haven't scored their since 2018 so I can understand the logic of not really trying.

I would play strongest 11 but if we are losing at HT rest players for the Brentford game.

Damn right, we're the holders, we shouldn't give up without a massive fight. What message does it send the players if we're like: 'never mind the semi final lads, we've got Brentford on saturday'.

Yes there's not much chance of us doing anything, but there is a small chance. And you can't allow the culture of the team to accept defeat.

The way I see it is we play every knockout game at full pelt, we're not winning the league so there's no point in focusing on that, if we get knocked out of every cup then the league becomes the focus, 1 game a week, time to prepare, we will go on a run and move up the table pretty quick, I guarantee it. City aren't invulnerable, they've had some pretty poor showings this season, we catch them on a bad day then there's every chance we can turn this around.

Is it likely? No, will it be easy? Again, no, but we have to have a never say die attitude.

Might as well go all in on this TBF. I mean chances are pretty low but leagues a write off.

Leagues a right off? With 14 games left?

Mid table at best. Run in is shit, squad are knackered, trips is literally crumbling before our eyes...

We should continue to try to win every game. After all - that is what we pay our money to view and I've never heard of surrendering being the silver bullet to win a war like.

It is better to try and fail than to not try at all.

I have tbf - and I’ve also heard of Pyrrhic victories, too :)

We shouldn’t be risking anyone for this though - so if any of the players are less than 100% they should not be starting.  There’s always a chance, even if the odds are ridiculously low

These cunts literally just lost a 2-0 lead to fucking Spurs in one half, and people don't want us to put our best side out and have a go? Fuck it, be knackered for Brentford, that means a lot less than this game IMO.

Well you're more intelligent than I am

But aye. My point remains the same. How can we justify going anywhere without the desire to win...thats bizarre imo. A win here could mean 90mins from another cup and an entry into Europe again. Even if we won today and lost at home to Brentford we have another dozen or so games to potentially fix things.

I think it's genuinely really sad that having won the cup last year we're so willingfully able to just throw away such opportunities already.

Imagine being one of the 3 to 5k going down there to be told they're fielding their second string and sacking it off.

I’d rather be fresh for Brentford tbh. The chances of getting through City from 2-0 then Arsenal are almost zero. Might as well give up on the league this season if we don’t beat Brentford looking at the table.

Your right, we should be going in to every game with the desire to win. That being said pragmatism is also needed. The worst case scenario which we've seen plenty of is playing players who are knackered, them getting injured and us losing both the game and important players.

Rotation is needed in this game, doesn't provide excuses or cover for not giving it our all though.

Folk said that when we defeated teams from the PLs top 5 at almost every stage of the cup last year...

We hadn’t been playing twice a week for three months and we weren’t blowing out our arse after 35 minutes like we were on Saturday though. We also didn’t have the injuries we have now.

Mind I find this in my footy WhatsApp chats nowadays too. Starting to wonder if I've been on the whacky backy

Either way - Howe is gonna get shit off folk unless we win the next two (not saying you). Our route to Europe isn't any less easy winning two Cup games than doing it via the league as far as I'm concerned.

It's basically a sprint versus a marathon.
