I agree their achievements are nigh on mirrored, but last season Villa reached the points tally we're on now in gameweek 26 last season FWIW. The same game we played and beat Spurs away on the 10th Feb. You can say it's because of loan signings in Jan, but we also could have done that this year instead of sitting on our hands and trying more of the same shite every week.

This is where I definitely agree like. Tbh not even so much January gone, but past Januarys.

given our relatively new CEO and DOF and the absent nature of our ownership, what is the selection process of a new manager going to look like beyond 'get Emery'

Well, the fact they are now at least in place and have been operating for a bit gives me hope but at this time last year a manager search would have been a bloody disaster.

They missed out to Eddie Howe's Newcastle United, which I think says a lot about who is and isn't getting credit in that scenario.

Emery's done a cracking job. Like I say, it's the disparity between the perception of what Emery's done at Villa vs what Howe's done here that I think is so jarring.

They finished equal on points with us in a season we hadn't got Europe and they were in the UCL and got to the QF. Which is why im saying is unfair to compare. all you have to do is look at 3rd place Man united rn. So many of the teams above us don't have European football. 4/9 teams in europe are in the bottom half of the table. Every manager will tell you how much harder it is to juggle both.

Yeah villa started off the season badly they should have been all but out UCL contention but they managed to go on a crazy run and fought for ucl until the end thanks to a good january transfer window. We had an opportunity to do that. We got knocked out of Europe earlier. All we had to do is concentrate on the league this month.

Yes, but in this whole Newcastle Villa seasons thing, they're a year behind us. Obviously there's no real scientific method to this, but if you pair them up their 24/25 (6th) was our 23/24 (7th), their 25/26 (4th or 5th and a probable cup win) is our 24/25 (5th and a cup win), whether their 26/27 will be our 25/26, we'll see.

Don’t be silly. He’s a very very good manager that has proven it time after time.

It wasn't a dig at you personally, I've just seem a lot of longing for Emery over the years.

I think he's an excellent tournament manager, who rehabilitated his imagine of being "the Europa League guy" by doing a brilliant job at Villa. He's very good though and I'd certainly not turn my nose up at him, personally I just think he's a long way from being the best in the league.

Can't wrap my head around why Emery's name even keeps coming up, there's absolutely no chance he's leaving Villa to come here. Might as well discuss bringing in Pep.

It was just a comparison in the context of someone saying 'Ireola could do for us what Emery did for Villa' naturally followed by a few of us saying that Howe has done for us what Emery has for Villa.

I've seen/heard his name pop up quite a few times tbf, on here and off here, not just in the last two pages.

At present they've finished in a European place the same amount of times as us and are due to finish this season +1 on that front. That's not them being consistent and us yo-yoing, there's very little difference unless you want to count the year 7th didn't get us into Europe because of Man United winning the FA Cup as a failure on our part, but the year they got 7th and got into the Conference as a success on theirs', which obviously makes no sense.

Howe also came in in November the previous year and got us from 20th to 11th, Emery came in and got them from 16th to 7th. The exact same amount of positions jumped and 43 points vs 46 points gained - again very similar.

Their positions have been 7th, 4th, 6th, probably 4th or 5th and maybe a cup -  starting from a higher position and with a squad that already had the likes of Martinez, Watkins, Konsa, Mings, Kamara, McGinn, Cash in it and with the Grealish money in its back pocket.

Comparatively, our positions have been 11th, 4th, 7th, 5th and a cup - starting from a lower position and with a squad that's only survivors are Schär, Murphy, and Joelinton - all of which are now on their way out. Our season ahead of theirs' has obviously been really bad, so it'll be interesting to see what their version (26/27) will be like.

None of this is to downplay Emery's achievements either btw, but the extent to which Emery is hailed as this that and the other while Howe's achievements are downplayed or sidelined - all while their achievements are actually really, really similar - is what I find mad. Easy to forget that this time a year ago and in fact at the start of this very successful season that there was a Emery Out section of Villa's support who were picking out his flaws in player selection, the tactics, the subs etc. Things can change really quickly in football like, look at the esteem Howe was held in a year ago. Emery could very well be in Howe's position in a year's time and vice-versa.

If Emery has a season like Howe's, which he's due according to your trajectory path, then he'll come in for plenty of criticism as well. I think Emery is a bit more flexible with his formations so might juggle his squad a bit better, but next season will be interesting for sure. I think a drop off is forgiveable but I think we've dropped off a cliff this season, that's what has caused real consternation. If you drop from 5th to 9th then it doesn't look so bad.

Except Arsenal. That didn't go so well.

Can't deny Emery gets results, but this Villa team for me is extremely boring to watch with 4 central midfielders behind Rogers in a seemingly free role, and somewhere in the distance ahead of him again, waiting for the ball to bounce the right way, Watkins lurking.

Rogers has played in literally all their games this season. Think they are incredibly dependent on him. Like Bruno x3 dependent.

Howe > Emery

There really isn't much between Emery and Howe like. I enjoy their tactical battles and pretty sure Howe has won more than him.

One thing I'll give Emery is that he can take a punt in the loan market/Spanish market quite easily and it's the difference between still playing people like Trippier or paying £55m for Elanga/Wissa

Just saw he's bought £400M or so of players and sold £300m worth

Howe's bought £750m worth and sold around £400m worth

Villas team was far stronger when Emery took over Gerrard as opposed to Howe's team when he took over Bruce.

Tough one
