It's definitely not the same strategy at all, you only have to look at the names of the players we are linked with to see that. They'll be occasions where we are beaten to signings by the usual teams because they want good players too and that's just life. But idk how you can look at the reports and think this is the same approach as last summer.

A strategy is two sets of activities chosen to fulfil your mission: things you do, and things you don’t do.
 

For example, last summer we didn’t make big sales early (which we have very clearly chosen to do this summer) or (as far as we know) attempt to sign any young, relatively inexperienced players from other leagues (which we are just about to do).

We were too ambitious last summer, we thought getting in the champions league and probably selling our best player would meant we had to get the top tier, PL/CL ready type players.

This summer it seems we've learnt our lesson and are going for more potential than we were prepared to do last summer.

Fwiw, with hindsight last summer was obviously an absolute shit show, but it made sense at the time IMO.

I don’t think we were too ambitious tbh; the targets made sense after making the CL and trying to establish ourselves there. The problem was more that once the elite clubs came in, we were always likely to lose out.

 

And I don’t think this summer is us ‘learning our lesson’ so much as adapting to no CL football. Without that pull, the market naturally shifts more toward younger/high-upside players imo. Or, at least I hope so. If we’re up there again the season after I’d rather complain about showing “too much ambition” than showing not enough.

Disagree with this, I think the targets made sense on paper but obviously football doesn't take place on paper. 

 

Your comment only makes sense if you believe the cartel would never come knocking for these players but given everyone is after the same profile of player why wouldn't they come knocking?

 

I think the champions league pull us overstated too mind as we saw last summer, Cunha and Sesko both reportedly turned us down when we had it and Manchester red didn't. 

 

I think Hubris met reality last summer.

Definitely Ross Wilson has changed things. And he should.

We can say he's changing things but it's more that we're just reverting back to what we did before last summer.

 

Going a few windows without new players, prior to last summer, has maybe made some of us forget how young some of our players were when we initially signed them.
