If only there was somewhere nearby to build a new stadium and leave an empty plot perfect for a new open space for Leazes Terrace to overlook. It really shouldn’t be a question.

Nah, green spaces need protecting.

Green spaces can also be created

Exactly. The late nineties plans for Castle Leazes had most of the present land the ground stands on being returned to greenery. I believe any new developments could be planned along these lines, even improved upon if money is no object. A new 80,000 capacity stadium wouldn't necessarily have to have much more of a footprint than the present ground and demolishing it would open up the view of the listed Leazes Terrace buildings; much more pleasant for the occupants, surely than having the East Stand looming over your house.

Part of me would be a little disappointed to see us extend the Gallowgate. Love the uniqueness of the stadium at present.

All anyone really wants to know is whether this means the installation of slides outside the ground are back on.

 I forgot about them.

Thats an old image. That land is mostly built on now, being built on, and has plans to be built on.

There is nowhere near enough land there now.

Additionally we need those buildings big. The Helix complex will bring outstanding research and scientific facilities to the city and is vital for increasing the skilled job sector in the city.

It's Castle Leazes he's illustrating surely.

Even worse suggestion.

Castle Leazes should be perfect. If money isn’t a problem then we could build a new ground, create a green space in front of Leazes Terrace, relocate the lake and band stand and let’s face it, vastly improve what is presently there. I can’t see why we’d need to lose green space and we’d be bringing a large green space closer to the city centre.

If we had to relocate for a season or two, are there any realistic ground shares?

I imagine they'd have to upgrade Gateshead International Stadium first and shift there for a bit? Kingston Park wouldn't do, and all other grounds are tiny.

That is exactly what the 1997 plans were . . .

Newcastle United FC : New Stadium Plans.

No. 1 - The 1997 Proposals . . .

There have been many proposals over the years (and over the centuries!) for Newcastle United Football Club to either build a new stadium at St James' Park, or to build a new stadium elsewhere.

These various proposals are clearly ideal "Newcastle as it might have been" articles, for inclusion on this thread.

Just to be different, this time I thought I would start with the most recent set of unrealised plans, and work my way backwards.

So, here is No. 1 . . . the 1997 proposals to build a new stadium a few hundred yards away from St James' Park, on "Castle Leazes Moor".

To get a CLEAR idea of where this stadium was to be built. At the top of this aerial photo, Castle Leazes Moor and St James' Park, can both be seen . .

http://www.freemenofnewcastle.com/images/MoorsNorthWestLarge.jpg

Here are the clubs plans (seen from above) for the new stadium on Castle Leazes Moor on the left, with the (St James' Park cut-in-half) St James' Centre, shown on the right . .

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundPlan.jpg

A view of the proposed new stadium, at the 'South East' corner, nearest to Leazes Park lake . .

Another view of the proposed 'Castle Leazes Moor' stadium . .

This sketch shows the proposed 'Leazes Way' walkway through the enlarged Leazes Park, that would have lead from the new "St James Centre" (proposed indoor stadium on site of St James Park) to the new stadium on Castle Leazes Moor . .

Another sketch of the proposed stadium, from Leazes park . .

The "ST JAMES' CENTRE" . . . was an important part of the overall plan.  This was to be an indoor stadium on the site of the current St James' Park. The South Stand and South West corner would remain as they were, the East and Milburn stands would be demolished, and the Sir John Hall stand and corners would be dismantled and re-erected closer to the remaining 'South Stand', to form the indoor stadium . . as shown, with the building over Strawberry Place linking to the 'new build' over St James' Park Metro Station . .

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-4.jpg

One of the envisaged advantages of the 'reduced size' St James' Park/Centre, to the immediate area, would be the extended Leazes Park, as shown here where it is overlooked by Leazes Terrace, at the point where the demolished 'East Stand' used to be . .

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleUnitedFC-1997NewGroundP-3.jpg

Now, the above plans and proposals, in the clubs own words at the time, from their "Newcastle United Football Club VISION STATEMENT" . . .

Might put a bit strain on the train companies but it’s only an extra 15-30 mins. If they club put transport on too it’s less than the distance of our nearest away game most of the time.

Stadium of Light would be interesting. No matter where it is though whether it’s Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Edinburgh you’re going to have 25-40k all going to one city which could be chaos, particularly as two are rivals.
