This while looking architecturaly, quite similar is at least different and sustainable.

That looks class but everyone would have to wear wellies, esp in the winter, and the farmer would do his nut at people trampling all over his crops.

I gave up yonks ago on the aesthetics of football stadiums.  The truth is that they’re all fucking ugly structures - it’s all steel, glass and concrete.  I’m yet to see a structure made from those materials that I’d consider beautiful (and I don’t mean impressive - I’ve seen plenty of those).

Newcastle’s centre is one of Georgian sandstone architecture - a hulking great football ground sat next to it is an eyesore (and the Caulkins of the world can fuck off with their ‘cathedral on the hill’ pish.  The city has two of those already - and if anyone wants to see what a truly beautiful cathedral looks like, they can hop on a train from central to Durham in ten mins).

SJP is ugly even with that said - it is brutalist in its architecture, and straightforwardly built to get as many arses on seats as possible in that footprint.  The SJP I knew as a kid (which looks nowt like the current one) was also an ugly, dilapidated wreck.  Yes, it was host our memories - but memories don’t go when a building is pulled down.

Monaco have a beautiful stadium.

Bamboo?

At least that way we could easily add 5,000 capacity year on year by barely lifting a finger.

I like the design of a lot of modern stadia, just don't have any emotional attachment to them. It's not that the designs are all bad.

We'd all quickly grow an attachment to a new arena/stadium after a season of champions league nights.

Absolutely idiotic question from a foreigner but I reckon folks will be in a good mood today so it’s a good time to ask, been wondering for years:

Why is Castle Leazes called Castle Leazes?

Was there once a castle there? It’s just a big patch of grass, no?

According to a google search, I didnt know that "Leazes meant meadowlands".  Learnt something myself.

“Leazes” means “meadowlands” and the tract of land on which the park is built has a history going back to the 13th century when King John gave the land to the townsmen of Newcastle to be used for grazing their cattle.

It's the name of that specific part of The Town Moor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Leazes

According to the councils character statement for the Leazes Conservation Area it is 'an area of common grazing land said to have been granted certain burgesses by King John as compensation for the enlargement of the castle moat'.

If true that would explain the name.

Populus’ newest stadium is a sweet little NWSL stadium here in Denver.

“A stadium in a park” is what they call it.

They want it to be a “24/7 365” concept with restaurants and housing. I’m assuming these are the kinds of plans (not just a stadium) being thrown our way now by Populus and the like.

Bigger stadium but can definitely see scope for the landscaping, boulevard stuff being used as a visual aid and sweetener to the Council. Thanks for sharing as really relevant if they’re going to get this through I think.

This one is only 14.5k so definitely much bigger needed. I’d just imagine the plans coming our way include lots of extras and not just here’s a stadium

I absolutely cannot wait for rendering season.

I’ve been in the stay at SJP camp forever. I still think I am…

However, there’s a part of me that can now accept moving knowing we finally won a trophy - and we will finally be able to parade it around SJP

Imagine if people like it

I never really considered anything other than hatred for anything modern. If they could somehow make it uniquely ours or something we would recognise as Newcastle, I think I'd explode.

Yes, as long as it is built to maximise atmosphere and amplify noise.

I'm somewhat hoping for something like the Beijing Olympic stadium and calling it 'The Magpies Nest' [emoji38]

Don't Magpies hoard silver in their nests :bluestar:

Completely off topic but the announcer is going to be another level of cringe next home game isn't he? Be able to hear the music back down Wembley.
