So does anybody think all the players who were going to leave under Roeder, Bramble, Moore, Gooch etc will now get an extra year to prove themselves under the new manager?

not if the new manager has ever watched us, or indeed any top flight football, ever.

id rather have sidwell than parker. how parker gets a game for england is beyond me. hes been absolutely shocking most of this season.

plus when reading came up here to play us, sidwell was asked if he was going to sign for newcastle and responded - hopefully, id love to play here. maybe hes not a money grabber and might actually just like newcastle, eg the stadium, the fans, the city blah blah blah.

hopefully we won't sign sidwell.

just not good enough, and no better than the not good enough players we already have.

Sidwell will add more depth to the central midfield, he has had a stonking season for reading a move here will put him up a notch on the england call up list.

Big sam will like him too, very similar player to Kevin Nolan, better coming forward than Parker, certainly wont turn my nose up at getting him for nothing, great prospect.

Peter Beardsley came into a suite on saturday and told everyone the steve sidwell deal was done.

Beardsley's been saying this for months, but anything can happen.

As a Reading fan and someone who has watched Sidwell week in week out for about 3 years now I can add the following to this thread.

First of all, despite what alot of Reading fans think, I personally don't think Sid is a money grabber. I think he is very ambitious and wants to play for England. I think he will move to a club that will best serve his England chances even if that club offers him a few grand per week less than another team. E.g. if Man City offered Sid £45K per week and Newcastle offered him £40K per week, I think he would choose Newcastle.

Secondly, Steve McLaren the muppet openly admitted a few weeks ago that he hadn't even watched Reading this season. What an idiot considering we have the answer to Englands Left back problems in our defence. Therefore any Reading player with serious England ambitions are gonna have to leave because we don't even come under the Muppet McLarens radar!

Thirdly, Is Sid good enough? I am not sure. He is one of the finest English Centre Midfielders that is for sure. He is definitely top 10 material. He isn't as good as Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Carrick, Fabregas, Arteta........... But he is probably better than pretty much everybody else. That is why I am very surprised that Chelsea are interested in him because Sid is very good at everything but he is not outstanding in one particular area. He is not quite top 4 but he is top 10. If Newcastle are trying to be a top 4 club then you need better players than Sid, but if you wanna be top 6 then Sid is definitely a good signing. you may as well get him because you won't compete with Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in terms of glamour and financial muscle so they will always get the Gerrards ahead of the Toon anyway.

Sidwells biggest weakness is his long range shooting. He cannot score from outside the box. I can remember only 3 long range pile drivers from Sid in the time he has been with Reading. Gerrard is hitting the target at least once a month with a stunning pile driver. As does Lamps, Scholes and other top midfielders.

Sidwell is a star man, he is a very honest and honourable bloke in my opinion, he has been completely honest with RFC and has seen out the full length of his contract! He has been honest about wanting to leave and he has given honest hardworking performances despite this being the final year of his contract with Reading and also despite the risk to himself that if he gets injured he would be without a contract and without a club. Although I am sure Reading would have looked after him.

Sid has been a key player in Reading's season and if this wasn't the last year of his deal with us and if he had decided to stay he would have probably won the player of the year vote. The reason the RFC fans didn't vote for him is because half are bitter and the other half would prefer to motivate a player that will be with us next season.

Wouldn't argue with any of that.

I think it has been pretty well documented previously that Sidwell wanted to leave Arsenal because he wasn't getting the opportunities and Arsenal didn't try to hard to keep him because they knew they had Fabregas improving at a rapid rate of knots.

He's talented, very talented even, but Chelsea won't want him except as a squad player and I don't think that will fit well with Sidwell's ambitions.

Would he get a game ahead of Nolan?

forget about signing Nolan,  Bolton will want stupid money if we Sam made an offer for him.

One other point that I should add about Sidwell is this. I read in this thread as well that someone thought he would be a good prospect.

Sidwell is 24/25 years old. He is no longer a prospect. What you see is what you will get. He won't get much better than he already is. He is a player at the peak of his professional game and playing ability. Don't expect to be buying a player who will come in and then improve massively.

I am really pleased that Roeder has now gone. He was the one factor that was making me think joining the Toon could be a mistake. I can't think of a worse manager that you would want to play for. But now that Roeder has gone I think Sidwell to the Toon army is a great move for both the player and the football club. Not so good for Reading losing a £7million pound player for F all......

No one would ever pay £7m for a player of Steve Sidwell's capabilities.

Souness would.

But hopefully our next manager won't want him.

The player isn't worth it, tbh.

Only if he happened to be playing for Rangers at the time...

And he could add another £5m to the price.

Maybe not good enough - depends what the immediate aim is. If it's top 4 then no. Top 6 - possibly. Don't forget that Reading are only 2 points away and he's been their best CM this season.

He's better than Parker though, and we could probably get a fair few £££ for Parker if we wanted - he is stil in the England squad afterall. If we got back what we paid for him and brought in Sidwell on a free and almost certainly less wages that would be an excellent piece of business imo.

There's really ony stupid NUFC fans who think that the likes of Dyer and Parker are real England players, though. Most teams wouldn't be swayed by that.

I'm not certain he IS better than Parker.

And i meant top 6/7 - there's no way we have anywhere near a squad for the top 4, and we're not particularly a big enough club to consider that at this point.

Sometimes I don't understand you NM, Sidwell has been very good this season and one of the reasons his team have pushed for a top 6 place yet said player on a free isn't good enough for us!

Its like when you say Roeder is a championship level manager at best and the players are aswell but we finish fairly comfortably in the premiership. Surely if everyone was as bad as you insist we would have been fighting it out with Watford, Charlton and West Ham all this time?
