His actual claim was that he wasn't taking money out of the club when he was using his dividend to buy shares which was a lie. He was buying those shares from shareholders so not a penny went to the club. Did he not stop buying additional shares back around 2004-2005? I'm sure something was mentioned quite a while ago about it since he'd almost reached a point where had he bought many more shares in the club he'd have been forced to make an offer for the rest, something that he didn't have the funds for (unless he was to offer 1p per share)

No-quotes-tastic, but how can they possibly confirm that? And why? From one of the the Journal pieces today http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2009/02/11/derek-llambias-says-we-re-still-a-buying-club-61634-22901430/

So....was there a meeting or not?? From that, there was a meeting where Ashley was offered a "ridiculous deal" which was dismissed by Ashley who then went to the pub. The initial story was that Ashley had ignored the meeting entirely to go to the pub, whereas according to Llambias' statement the meeting had already occurred by the time they'd reached the pub.
-
Can you imagine a performance based contract for Duff? He'd probably end up earning £10 a week.
-
That puzzled me a bit too, Whelan detests Ashley yet he was willing to deal with the club in January. There are loads of reports of JJB Sports being in financial difficulties (bailiffs turning up, etc.), I don't think Whelan is in any position to be picky about who he does business with at the moment.

His win rate was no better than Bryan Robson's.

He's a more charismatic and friendly version of Souness. Doesn't bother with silly things like instructions or tactics, he relies totally on the ability of his players to find their way. When it's been obvious to all around him that his teams have needed new ideas or impetus he's generally gone for the conservative option every time - losing 1-0 with 5 minutes to go? don't bother using that striker on your bench, try swapping your defensive midfielder for a different defensive midfielder. When his players are low on confidence, when his players have run out of ideas or the opposition have him tactically out thought he has no clue. He lost 8-1 to Middlesbrough. He might be able to give the Pompey players a bit of a short-term confidence boost and his coaches should be able to get the team to play a little more as a unit instead of individuals but he's no magician, he's not going to be able to wave his hands and make everything all right. Without funds for new players and an already massive wage bill he'll struggle there in the long run even if he's able to sort them out in the short-term.

Xisco joins Deportivo on loan until the end of the season

Persuade Joe that he's from Wallsend? -
nowt to say then ? Just joking man, I'm pretty bored, we all know spending money improves your chances of doing well, but it's not a given, you need the right manager, the right scouts and the right amount of money but you can do well without spending massive amount if you have the right manager e.g. Moyes and Everton. on the other hand, if you are lucky enough to get a decent manager, and it IS a lottery, and don't back him, he'll be off. Like Moyes, unless Everton are taken over or it all suddenly goes tits up for him. When you say "do well", how well do YOU want to do ? It's a lottery getting a good manager? No it's a skill, not an easy one but it is definately a skill. is it now ? We'll see how easily Arsenal replace Wenger and ManU replace Ferguson. Or Everton replace Moyes .......... Even a "good manager" isn't necessarily the "right manager", which I suppose adds credence to NE5's "lottery" theory. Bit simplistic on the whole though, as usual. Man U will appoint a good successor to Fergie because I bet right now Fergie is invovled in identifying him and monitoring them over a decent time span. not necessarily. But it depends what you mean by "decent". Didn't Chelsea think they appointed a worthy successor to Mourinho ? Two appointments later, and this is an owner who knows about football. Arguably they did, unfortunately they sacked him in the summer & hired Scolari. Scolari had never managed a club in Europe, he hadn't been involved in club management since 2001. He was a risky appointment that most people thought would succeed based on his reputation.
-
I wouldn't think so. I think in the summer we will make every effort to get rid of a good number of players who just aren't worth what they are costing the club, and this will allow for more money to be invested on top of the £8 million currently sitting there. Many thought that would happen last summer. And this January. The problem is, someone else has to want them. And we've given two of them nice new contracts. Giving Shola a new contract is daft iyam, but I don't think they had any choice with Butt did they? EDIT: Unless you mean Harper No idea on the Butt thing, I still don't buy us not having any choice in the matter. What, so the deal and wages were already agreed years ago? Seems mental. Quite possibly true though. If you play..... we offer you..... although you'll be free to walk away if you want. Pompey had a similar deal with Kanu. If he played more than 20 games, then he was given the chance to sign for an extra year. Going back to the shola thing, does nobody else think that maybe its to make sure we dont lose him for nothing? Shola would interest a lot of Championship clubs, he wont be on a huge amount. I think it was more to do with Llambias not really knowing too much about the game & trusting Kinnear's word that Ameobi had a future here.
-
I'm not convinced there's ever been a contract on offer. The idea that Kinnear was going to be here more than a couple of months will have made the club look a little more stable during the transfer window (though the idea of Kinnear being here longer term may have put players off joining just as much). First Kinnear comes out & says that he's not going to sign the contract until the summer, then he's suddenly taken ill with high blood pressure. He's got the perfect excuse now for turning round at the end of the season & saying I'd like to continue, but my health won't allow it. He gets a job as chief scout or communications officer or similar for the club and gets to bow out with a little grace, the club get to appoint a real manager. At least, that's the way I hope it occurs.
-
Guy certainly has a sense of humour, how would we do this then? 1) Wait for UEFA to kick all clubs with huge debts out of Europe (Liverpool, Man Utd, etc.) 2) Qualify for Champions League by finishing 12th 3) Watch as a load of top clubs implode due to their debts & no CL incomes 4) Buy their players for a pittance 5) Be one of the few clubs left standing Or Hire (and fund) a decent manager after seeing how Villa have done

I'm sure the reason they're being picked ahead of him is because his English isn't good enough & Kinnear can't communicate his (lack of) ideas to Xisco whereas the players you mention - Smith & Viduka - are both native English speakers. With a different manager who has a clue how to communicate that doesn't simply involve shouting louder until he understands we'd probably see Xisco a lot more than Smith, Viduka, Ameobi or Carroll. -
JFK: I want you to play in the reserves tonight Xisco: qué? JFK (louder): I want you to play in the reserves tonight Xisco: qué? JFK (louder again): I want you to play in the reserves tonight Xisco: qué? JFK (now shouting): I want you to play in the bloody reserves tonight Xisco: qué? JFK (there's a vein throbbing in his forehead by now & his left eye is twitching): Reservos! You play in reserves! Tonight! Xisco: qué?

Tony Adams - Decent coach by all accounts, shit manager Paul Ince - Arrogant player, got himself kicked out of Man Utd by getting his own team mates to call him the guvnor. Had managed to piss off half the Blackburn players very shortly after joining them (allegedly). Paul Gascoigne - The man's barking mad, who in their right mind thought he'd ever be a good manager? Stuart Pearce - Seems to be doing a decent job with the U21's David Platt - Did OK with the U21's, did OK at first with Forest. Would probably be a decent coach or assistant manager. Gareth Southgate - Reminds me of a young Glenn Roeder, nice guy, shit manager. Not every player is cut out to be a manager. Some of the world's greatest players have turned out to be abysmally bad managers, possibly because they have such fantastic natural talent they struggle to deal with players who lack the same abilities as they possess. If you want to find a good manager, don't look for those players with any great degree of natural talent, look for the players who have had to work twice as hard to be half as good, the ones who understand that football is a team-based game & not about individuals.
-
Paying the rest of the player's wages. Their wage bill was over 90% of their turnover last season, pretty sure that has gone up this season too.
