I think Bellamy was targeted originally in 2000 because Bobby knew Shearer was pretty finished as an athlete and needed someone who'd be able to put pressure on the CBs all game and be unselfish in the final third. Bellamy benefited so much from his stint here, though. By the time he left he was on course for over 20 goals that season. Smashing player, really. I'd urge anyone to watch the 02-03 season in particular. Bellamy didn't get that many of our goals but he played a part in an absolutely staggering amount of them through his pace, energy and creativity. I don't think I'll ever see a better second striker in our colours than 93-95ish Beardsley but Bellamy came pretty close.

Fwiw Bellamy and Robert still haven't been replaced 9 years later and if we turned their clocks back a decade or less and signed them they'd be our best 2 players, even in our best side since Bobby.
