So lets say the club get relegated. Ashley and PCP/PIF negotiate a deal where they pay 220M for Newcastle and if the club come straight back up they pay an additional 80M. If they club doesn't bounce straight back, that's it. Ashley would know the consortium (not Consortium, there's only one Consortium) wouldn't stay down to chisel the 80M because they would lose more money if they did. The consortium would have the benefit of a parachute payment. Start building a young, hungry potentially better squad with a good manager as well as infrastructure improvements. When the club does come up it will have a strong foundation and be ready to add key pieces to push on for a mid table finish and beyond. That situation wouldn't be as good as staying up would be but I think that kind of arrangement is good for all sides. Ashley gets his money in a more structured deal and the consortium gets to clean house and expectedly bounce right back up.
