I've thought this should be the case for absolutely ages. The season when it was Wrexham and Notts County neck and neck all year about 20 points ahead of the rest highlighted how mental it was that only first place gets automatic promotion. I know the point of play-off places is to give teams a chance to go up without having the best side in the league but you had Notts Co in second place on 107 points in the playoffs whilst 7th placed Bromley were in there with 71, it was a bit ridiculous.
