Newcastle 0-1 Andre Marriner - 29/8/15 - Post Match Reaction From Page 5
Wallsendmag replied to Mike's topic in Football
TOON ABUSE IS DISGRACE - Ian Wright I was at the Newcastle v Arsenal match at the weekend, in the middle of the Toon fans, and was disgusted by the abuse they hurled at Andre Marriner. It wasn't just a small group - it was thousands of them acting in unison - and I found it unfair and deeply offensive. Ref Marriner got the decision to send off Aleksandar Mitrovic absolutely spot on. He went in over the top on Francis Coquelin with his studs showing and it was an automatic red card. It didn't matter whether that happened after 16 minutes or 86. A red card is a red card and for Newcastle fans to accuse Marriner of spoiling the game is crazy. Blame Mitrovic for that. But the amount of venom that came from the fans was something I genuinely haven't experienced before. I've played in matches where the supporters were extremely hostile but not like this. They were at the ref for the whole of the game, even though he actually turned in a really good performance - which is quite something under the circumstances. If he got one big decision wrong, it was when he refused to give Arsenal a penalty. Otherwise he got the big calls right. I don't like to see bullying in any form, and that is what the Toon fans were doing. It's not on, and when it gets this bad the authorities have to look at it and take action. Ok, when there are that many people involved, it's tough to know what to do. But clubs also have to think of ways to protect refs from this kind of intimidation. Let's do something before this becomes the norm. -

Ian Wright has absolutely slaughtered the crowd for giving the ref so much stick on Saturday, basically accusing the fans of bullying him. It's in The Sun so there's no link but I'll type it out on here saying how I'm a bit bored at work tonight. -

Excellent news. Always had a soft spot for Depor because they were the first Spanish team I took an interest in when Sky first started showing the Spanish Football about 15 years ago and they had a great side. Even managed to win the league and had Diego Tristan and Roy McKaay up front.

18/20 Got Bournemouth and Spurs wrong.

I just find it so weird that their default setting as soon as they sign a player is "what will the mags think?" Doubt there's another set of fans anywhere with that mentality. I mean a 200 odd post thread (and counting) on what we'll make of their latest signing is just beyond ridiculous. I've noticed there's more fans from other clubs posting on their board now clearly just to take the piss. A Villa fan had them tied up in knots last week and all they could say in reply was attendances, attendances, as a sign that they're a bigger club yet they'll be lapping this rank patter Borinis came out with (clearly to try to get them inside because he knocked them back so many times) as gospel despite us being a far better supported club. Certainly a "special" breed and no mistake.

10 page, 200+ replies thread on their forum entitled "Mags are livid over Borini". Couldn't make it up! http://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/mags-are-livid-over-borini.1127175/

£10m is a lot of money, especially to a club who've got nowt. Not sure what us spunking £6m on Rivière has to to with them paying £10m for a bang average striker who was desperate to sign for anyone else but them either.

It's a red card. Whether it would warrant it 10 years ago is irrelevant...today it is a red card, sadly. Is it/was it f***. Today's footballers like Coquelin are nowt but namby pamby shithouse c***s. Yellow card for Mitrovic was warranted, red card not. No intent whatsoever...Arsenal deserved their win but were assisted by a bent corrupt ref after he missed a blatant penalty and felt the need to rectify his amateurish mistake. Marriner should be demoted to non league football, the bent c***... Bit harsh on non league football tbh. The bloke is beyond incompetent, he's a downright cheat. I still remember when the same bloke refereed us down at Goodison (Ben Arfa 1-0) when he refused to give us the most blatant penalty you are ever likely to see when Nolan had his legs swiped from underneath him just as he was about to make it 2-0 and he unbelievably waved play on. The cameras showed he had a clear view of it and every single pundit, and an ex referee, were all in amazement that he didn't give it because it was so clear cut. Things like that go beyond incompetence. Since I packed my season ticket I've started watching Northern League and it's refreshing to see referees using common sense there. At that level Mitrovic challenge would have been a foul and possibly a booking, eye on the ball all the way and he stood on his foot. That's what it was, nothing more. The best refereeing performances are the ones where they don't get a mention. Today's newspapers will be all about Marriner. No doubt that's what he'll want but all it shows is how bad a game he had. -
Played well today.

Need to get another forward in. Mitrovic is going to miss the majority of the season through suspension.

Another good defensive display but the fact remains that we've only scored in 1 of our 4 league games so far. -

Shame for the fans who paid so much money to watch a referee because he sure as hell made sure the occasion was all about him. Hope he gets lynched on his way back to his car. -
They had 14,000 in midweek with tickets priced at £10/£5. Villa charged more and had 21,000. They get good league crowds because their tickets are dirt cheap and they give loads away, something they've done ever since they moved into the SOS. If they charged similar admission fees for league games as the likes of Villa do they would get smaller crowds than Villa. Remember seeing their accounts a couple of seasons ago which showed their average revenue per seat was 15 quid. Think ours was £27 and we certainly aren't one of the most expensive teams to watch. Never understood their mentality of praising each other for doing something they want to do mind.

The only time I remember us playing in our away shirt at home was against Sheff Wed in 1993. -

They only had 11k at their home match last night If we're all deluded and not even a big club why all the interest in playing us? -
Aye but tbf, if they didn't go to the match it'd be impossible for them to see their BEST mates and 2nd cousin once-removed. Where else can they have a quiet natter about fat uncle gaz and his latest relapse? What about those who are happy that the club's starting to act like a football club again? are they allowed to go back? No because you are not a proper fan if you go to games, not until it's been declared acceptable on twitter. You're killing the club, paying for a ticket and sitting on a seat is killing the club. Implies you don't understand the point tbh, what does it have to do with actual f***ing seats in a stadium and what doesn't it have to do with pumping money into an institution that has been wilfully neglectful of the playing squad, spiteful towards the club's fans and disinterested in success on the field. Ground should have been half empty years ago, might have seen a bit of investment or a new owner sooner. Whether the stadium is full or empty... MA will not give a toss. Too much money is made from TV and sponsorship deals, MA could easily offset the loss of the revenue from matchday by selling two players on high wages. The whole "giving money is killing the club" is totally wrong and wide of the mark. Of course he gives a toss. Gate receipts are his 2nd highest revenue source. Name me any businessman or company that would quite happily sacrifice that?

Good post apart from where you state there's similarities between Ashley and Sir John Hall. When SJH took control we were on the bones of our arses, heading for the 3rd division for the 1st time in our history and playing in a ramshackle old ground where the majority of fans got soaked to the skin when it rained. He put his money where his mouth was, brought back Kevin Keegan, broke the world record transfer fee, gave us Champions League football, brought us to within a fannys hair from the league title and one of the best stadiums in Europe. I don't begrudge the bloke a penny of whatever he took out. Ashley on the other hand........

Pretty much my thoughts.

We doubled that. Our fans are twice as good as theirs though tbf. Tbh nothing to be proud of paying to see Newcastle and moaning about Ashley. In my view whoever went to the game is f***ing scum....and f*** the kids only chance to see them bs. Well done to the Sunderland fans I say. NUFC Mugs Good game by sound of it tho Dear me. Calling young bairns who go along to watch their team play scum. A new low for this messageboard. Of course you could have stood outside SJP last night and called them to their faces rather than hiding on here but you know one if their dad's would have flattened you straight away so I can understand why you didn't. I didn't go last night because I won't waste any more time or money watching cup games until I see for myself that the club are taking them seriously but if others want to then that's fair enough. Sounds like those that did had quite an enjoyable evening.

Wouldn't be surprised if they won today. They usually struggle against the other bottom teams (excluding us) but always seem to pull off an unlikely result when they play the better sides and nobody expects them to get anything.
