He's not a particularly good passer, tackler, good first touch or good at positioning and the way he dribbles means he will lose the ball every now and again, which would be much more dangerous in the centre of the pitch. Yes, if he played there he would be able to drive forward on the counter sometimes so I do see where people are coming from, but the negatives of playing him cm outweigh the positives imo. He can still use his strengths on the outside and his weaknesses will be less exposed.

A defence is obviously less about the individuals and more about how the four complement each other and how the manager organises them. However financially secure you are, let's say his compo is 1 million, that's still an absolutely huge amount to walk away from for no good reason at 50 something with an uncertain future income. It's not like him resigning right now would even particularly help the club.
