Lets be brutaly honest here. Almiron was dogshit before Howe came and was only in and out of the side at the back end of last season. Yes hes turned into Zidane this season but I doubt the likes of Darlow and Karius will become Dino Zoff overnight by playing one cup game. Why play the shittest of the three available keepers in a competition that offers the best chance of winning anything this season?

Prove themselves? The fact Howe had Darlow on the bench ahead of Karius on Sunday tells you his opinion of him.

Why the clamour for a shit keeper to play? It should be Pope playing. Karius is no better than Darlow and has barely played a game in the last two years. And before anyone says he's better than Darlow, who was on the bench on Sunday?

I'd play the same team as Sunday bar Targett and SMax in for Burn/Murphy. If Wilson is fit give him the first half and Wood the second. Maybe Lascelles for Schar as well. Ideally get a couple of goals up and then ring the changes for the last half an hour.

Lots of scenarios whereby one of the teams is shafted in the group. Lets say one group has England, New Zealand and Mexico in it. England play NZ first and win 4-0. Next game is England v Mexico. England know they're pretty much already through regardless of the result, so play the squad players to keep the better players fresh. As a result we lose say 0-2 and in the process have basically eliminated NZ before they even play Mexico (unless they beat them 3-0)......

I see the 2026 WC will have 16 groups of three teams each. So the team that has to play in the first two games could be shafted by collusion if the final game would see both teams playing it going through with a certain outcome.
