If it was just the UEFA rules we could do it and just take a fine but seeing the PL deduct points from Forest and Everton is something our leadership don’t want us to incur - we scraped CL on goal difference so don’t have the margins to take 3-10 point hits.

Definitely the latter. We’ve got decent headroom now under PSR with the 21/22 losses rolling off the calculation but it’s about being able to do what we need with the squad which will eat that up quickly. We know they want a defender, a GK and a versatile forward - we don’t have the wiggle room to blast £80m and the £55m Elanga fee and expect to have money to spend on the other areas where we need depth. Selling Longstaff and Willock (plus having to buy at least one replacement) won’t be big enough to do all of that. Even selling Barnes would be a struggle to cover it. Meaning it would have to be a bigger player going for a bigger fee.

Also fuck all chance we pay £80m+ for a player not Premier League or Champions League tested. Look at Antony at Man Utd ffs.

That’s exactly what it says - they’ve made his representatives aware who, as we saw with the first time we tried to get him, hold a lot of sway. Presumably if we get the green light off them, we work to try and agree the fee with Frankfurt. Cynically, I see the only chance we get him being Isak going. The suspicious part of me is wondering whether the Gyokeres transfer not going through yet is Arsenal making a play if Liverpool try to sign Isak.
