Loads of teams have proper CBs and FullBacks that don't need their hand held by a defensive winger, or someone putting in a wingback's shift from midfield, or hell, even 2 DMs.

You need a competent CM who has legs to go side-to-side, with physicality and positional awareness. You need 2 CBs who don't get bossed off the ball, who can win the first or take down the 2nd ball quickly, they also don't need a CM to hold their hand. You need 2 fullbacks who again, don't need to have wingers help them every single time who also can get up and down the pitch and support attacks but also put in the shift.

There's no secret that Sissoko hasn't been able to play his natural position when the spine and defense has been weak as piss since he's signed for us.

Goodness me, some classics in there. Sounds like he's been at the devil's lettuce again.

f***ing Riviere man

He can't have seen him train or play. Would prefer to play Toney, recall Armstrong or get Shearer out of retirement. The lad is utter bobbins.

On the contrary, I bet he looks fantastic in training, he's pretty good on the ball, unfortunately he cacks his pants in front of goal. Not a confident finisher at all.

LOL! He's already lost it, he lost it when he changed the system from what was going to be possession ball to whatever the F* we're playing right now.

Obvious comparisons to Pardew, as in not having any plan other than the long ball - counter s*.

I'm thinking any decent manager would get something out of the crop we have, the squad isn't THAT bad, as long as we have someone that would play to the squads strenghts (not that that is that much, but anyway...).

Rodgers next? Just because he had Swans playing decent, without actually having the players to do so? ... iono anymore, kinda lost. But one thing is for sure, it's getting kind of exhausting watching the games these days, just same ol shiz we've been watching for seasons with a spell or two of nice 1-2s once in a blue moon.

I honestly think it is that bad, no central midfield worth mentioning in the slightest, the defense is terrible and we can't score. Theres individually good players but the key areas of cb and cm are so bad its hard to overcome

Until we've seen our best players in a system that suits their qualities failing I will continue to believe these are good enough for midtable in this league. Evidently, no left hand side, two defensive midfielders, four central midfielders and no wingers does not get the best out of this squad. Why McClaren keeps at it begars belief really.

I can't hate him. He's a decent guy probably doing his best.

He is a total f***ing pansy, though, and I've very little respect for him and zero faith he can turn this around.

 I don't want to make a habit of agreeing with Ron but I totally agree with the above.

McClaren's not a bad person, he's just utterly useless.

Our squad is woeful like. In goal we have a Championship 'keeper at best. Colo is way past his best and Mbemba is inexperienced at this level. At full-back Dummett is Championshop standard and Jaanmat a liability defensively. In midfield we have Gini who for me is our best and only top class player or stand out player. We have Sissoko who is inconsistent and technically very average and then we have Colback, a free from the mackems who have for the last decade it seems constantly been in a relegation fight... and he was one of their better players! Anita is a nothing player, not great, but not shit, just meh. Up front we have two youngsters from a low level of Europen football. Deeper into the squad and we have Cisse who the club have wanted rid of for a long time, Tiote likewise, both players who don't want to be here. The whole squad stinks. There is very little talent and zero balance. I'd say we have one of the worst squads in the league.

I don't think McClaren is a bad person, but in his own way he's just as much of a fraud as Pardew was, and he's getting worse results. This is after all a man whose first act upon becoming England manager was hiring Max Clifford and whitening his teeth, and whose last act was skulking under an umbrella as the side crashed out of the Euros; a man who has been sacked or pushed to resign from his last four jobs; a man who turned us down until he was tossed by Derby and managed to negotiate an unusually comfortable deal.

We have an awful squad, unbalanced, lacking in experience, and without a lot of quality in any position, but we are playing in a poor version of the Premier League, and the players don't seem to have conviction in anything they're doing. The formation doesn't work, we don't have a style of play, and against Leicester and Crystal Palace in particular we have conjured some of the most disgraceful performances that I've ever seen. And after two defeats and three shots on target over the last two games, with the team languishing in the relegation zone, he comes out and praises our performances as 'magnificent'. That's utterly contemptuous in my view.

There's nothing to praise McClaren for at this point, but while he's happy to boast Riviere as like a new signing, it's worth reiterating how he treated our younger players from the start of this campaign. Perez and Aarons were our only decent players in the pre-season, yet both started the season outside the first eleven, while he hastily got rid of Sammy Ameobi and Mehdi Abeid. With only two other active central midfielders in the squad, Abeid was an obvious keeper. And this might earn me the scorn of many posters, but while it wasn't hard and he wasn't very good, I still thought Sammy Ameobi was one of our better performers last season, at least maintaining his position down the left side, helping out the full back, and I reckon he'd be the best crosser and creative passer in our side: he can play a patient through ball, which is something nobody in our current squad can muster.

I'd agree with all of that Gottlob, but I still don't accept that our squad is awful. The way we are playing is awful alright.

Our overall squad is quite bad, but it includes some pretty good players. Just too many glaring weaknesses for the end result to be good.

Depends on what you would define as a good end result really. Very few people would have said this squad is so bad relegation is unavoidable. If we go down or finish no higher than last season there is no way anyone can convince me MClaren hasn't failed to get the best of the tools at his disposal.

3 posts in nearly 7 years. Great post even if I don't personally agree with all of it.

The shittest defence in the league and no proven goalscorer in the entire squad and you're still at it, man. Give over.

Pick a team from our players that you think would get midtable

                      Krul

Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara

                    Tiote

            Sissoko Wijnaldum

  Thauvin                    Perez

                  Mitrovic

Bench: Elliot/Darlow, Lascelles, Dummett, Anita/Colback, Aarons, De Jong, Cisse

Look, it's not good enough for where I want NUFC to be and there are certainly huge weaknesses to the squad, but it should be adequate enough to compete for 10-12th alongside the likes of West Brom, West Ham and the likes.
