Winning that league is a far bigger achievement. Simply because of the club he was at. Had it been Ajax or PSV it would have been far less impressive.

There's a lot of debate in this thread since its pretty clear cut. He's a decent manager, no more, no less.

What it says about the bigger picture at Newcastle is a different matter. Was anyone really surprised we didn't show more ambition?

Suppose that's for the Mike Ashley thread.

At least he seems to take responsibility when his team fails. It'll be refreshing not hearing the manager/coach making excuses after a loss and a poor performance.

Still and underwhelming appointment though.

Wishful thinking imo, considering he was meant to have hailed Derby's performances as fantastic no matter how good or bad they were and regardless of the result. I've said it before, but after four years I wouldn't be surprised if McClaren was hated as much as Pardew. Either that or he will have been let go for not being sufficiently abnoxious.

Did the same at Boro.  Always said they were magnificent no matter how bad they were.

I must be ill-informed then. Well, it looks like another season of blaming fans, the weather, the tealady, Mehdi Abeid etc.

Just seen some idiot elsewhere was sticking up for SMC citing that 'even Fergie was shite before he went to Man Utd so give him a chance'

EH???

Aberdeen were the best team in Scotland and had won a European Trophy by beating Real Madrid in the final, they had also broken the Old Firm monopoly.

Some people are clueless.

Even if Fergie was s*** before he went to Man U, what does that have to do with Mcclaren?  :idiot2:

I am sick of giving shit managers a chance. Hes not here because he is any good, he's here because he will tow the line and be quite happy as another Ashley yes man.

Anyway, under four weeks til Pre Season. Absolutely no rush from the club to get fans onside by buying players. The ink on SMC's contract will still be drying by the dealine for ST renewals

I said his last 5 years were shite and last two jobs were ultimately failures. His response was 'would you have took Fergie pre Man Utd' and then that golden nugget

He's just underwhelming, i don't think anyone is saying he's outright bad just we should be aiming higher but that's Ashleys NUFC in a nutshell.

Thats it exactly. Ashley gives us the smallest improvement possible on what we had previously in Pardew as he will when it comes to signings this summer. Paper talk of Abdennour for £20m

He's better than Pardew but we could have got better if we really tried is the gist.

I think by now it's pretty clear we are never going to go for a really ambitious manager while we are owned by Ashley. The best we can hope for is someone who knows how to put a team together and gets them playing good football. In that context McClaren is not a bad shout especially given our recent appointments.

Basically my feeling as well. It's an OK appointment in the context of where we are, but it doesn't change the depressing picture of the club as a whole.

Being just above average is the worst we could hope for. Best case scenario is a serious manager. Second best case was Carver.

If you believe in the scorched earth policy of getting Ashley out then yep, you're right. Not sure everyone failing as quickly as possible is really the answer, but then again I don't know what is.

Hated appointment of Pardew and trash before him

Gutted by and hated Carver

McClaren is "safe" - no more, no less.

Not to say "safe" doesnt work out very well for us.

Also not to say having Viera would have worked out well, could well have ended in disaster.

So we have ended up with safe.

At 17th we had him squirming on Sky TV. Had we been 11th would we have put the pressure on him?

I know what you're saying, I don't disagree really. But he squirmed on TV and then he didn't change his approach at all... or at least not by very much.

It's quite hard to muster a debate on this because I don't want Carver, don't have any feelings about McClaren and I have no idea whether relegation would make Ashley more likely to sell. Not sure I can be bothered to form opinions beyond that!
