Fat Sam and his Fat Head

I think they should keep it hushed up until 5:15 on Saturday, when the new manager walks down to the dugout, complete with fireworks and theme music. It'll be like Royal Rumble where you don't know if it'll be Steve Austin or Maye Young.  And if it's Jose he should powerbomb Fergie through the Spanish announcers table.

  I'm nearly in tears here. JR would have to commentate too to make it a perfect scenario.

Bah gawd! He nearly broke him in two! That man has a family!

In other news..... (from that page)

"Robbie Savage says he snubbed Sunderland because boss Roy Keane didn't want him enough.

Savage has elected to join Paul Jewell's Derby County in a £1.5million move."

Musn't of had enough hair on his body to warrant Keano making a 'super serious' move for him.

My favourite bit of that story was Savage proclaiming: "I'm the type of player that can keep a team in the Premier League."

Why Sam had to go

Jan 10 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

TOON tycoon Mike Ashley’s patience finally snapped with manager Sam Allardyce when the former Bolton Wanderers manager refused to switch to a “more attractive” brand of football.

Sam Allardyce

The billionaire United chief – who has had plenty opportunity to hear the supporter’s views in recent away games – is, just like the Toon fans, thought to have been sickened by the philosophy of Allardyce and his army of backroom staff to “win ugly.”

He knows the Geordie public demand both entertainment and free-flowing attractive football.

Both Big Sam and United’s top players were consulted about the crisis at St James’s Park – and just why Newcastle were serving up such abject football in front of packed houses on Tyneside.

Ashley and chairman Chris Mort are believed to have been deeply concerned about why Allardyce was testing the patience of the Toon Army.

Yet it was Allardyce’s “unwillingness” to drop his long-ball tactics which proved the straw which broke the camel’s back.

It looked like Big Sam had weathered the storm after the stalemate at Stoke City to earn a third-round replay in the FA Cup.

However, after the fourth-round draw pulled out a trip to Arsenal – and that was only if United beat the Championship side – nobody could forgive either Ashley or Mort if they had posed the question: “Just how are we supposed to beat Arsenal with tactics like this?”

Even then, it still appeared the axed Toon boss had one finger still hanging on to the cliff once the United board had digested the inept performance against Stoke.

Whether or not it was realistic to think Big Sam had what it took to turn round a season heading for disaster, the word from a source close to the boardroom yesterday lunchtime was that “enough is enough.”

That source told the Chronicle today: “The current board lost patience with Sam due to his unwillingness to play a more attractive brand of football.

“The manager only seemed to want to win ugly.

“While nobody minds the team winning ugly now and again, nobody at club wanted that every week.

“However, at the minute they felt they were losing ugly.

“They had tried to keep the pressure off Sam by being supportive and coming out in public to back him, but felt enough is enough.”

United will be making additions to the squad during the January transfer window.

However, the Chronicle understands the board were not prepared to allow Allardyce to blow the transfer kitty set aside for the next three weeks.

The source continued: “The board was willing to find new players, but it was always a doubt whether they would be signed under Sam.

“They speak to players here a lot of the time and they are not happy with the style of play.”

Meanwhile, the talk coming from the dressing room was of discontent, again at the “ugly tactics” of Big Sam.

The likes of Nicky Butt, Emre, Oba Martins, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Geremi, Habib Beye, Shay Given, Damien Duff, Alan Smith and Jose Enrique have all tasted Champions League football.

That is the reason they are all believed to have signed for Newcastle in the first place.

Speaking on the mood of the players and their dissilusionment with tactics, the insider said: “It is not what they are used to.

“While it is probably successful at other clubs, it is not working there.

“The players want to play a more attacking style of football.

“They are perfectly entitled to feel that way because many of them have played in the Champions League.”

Now, with history repeating itself and United heading to Old Trafford for the second time without a manager – the last being 1999 – many fans may have been expecting the axe to be wielded after the visit to Manchester United with the odds stacked against Newcastle to get even a point.

Added the source: “It is not about losing to teams like Manchester United.

“Newcastle United should be trying to win every game.

“The problem has been they have been losing to Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth and Derby County – and that is just not acceptable.”

More "club sources" have their say, and a lot of it appears to be common sense.

i'll guess he can...unlikely to be the team he's playing for though

I would have been delighted to have been been watching "win ugly" football over the past 8 months.

yes but would you have been delighted if we'd won more but came out after every game like we did after birmingham knowing we didn't deserve it ?

Chelsea fans were livid at our "ugly" long ball football we played against them, but we still deserved something.  Results would have given him more time, taking a decent stab at it and not coming away with anything (like we did at blackbunr) would have given him more time.  But about 80% of the time we were producing neither.

Find it a bit strange that Mort has always said that we're looking for a long-term solution etc, everything he's has made a whole lot of sense. Up til now. Talks about sacking the manager for us wanting to play more attractive football doesn't really make much sense to me. Fair enough, we've been utter, utter garbage this season, but the sacking is a total contradiction from all that Mort has said previously.

Btw, I'm still not decided on whether I agree with the sacking or not. If we have a top-drawer lined up, then it was the right thing to do, if not we should've sticked with Sam

Wheres Coach HTT would be interesting to hear his view of things. Thought he was being overly pessimistic with his posts a few days ago but he has been proven right when he thought Sam would not last.

Also hope for once Oliver is correct in his big name blow your socks off manager who wants to manage us otherwise we are heading into groundhog day territory.

What a lot were saying for weeks, HTT just caught up a few days ago.

Mort takes orders when all is said and done. He can't really be held accountable that one of those orders makes previous statements redundant.

But McClaren appears to be a very remote prospect after Newcastle owner Mike Ashley quipped last month that the former Boro manager was "there with the ex-wife on the 'Do not get a Christmas card' list".

Gotta love that from Mike Ashley, quality stuff. (from article on bbc sport website btw)
