KK: Milner going nowhere

Rely on gutierrez? He hasn't shown he can do anything yet until the real games start.

He has shown us what he can do in pre-season and if he can carry that over to league games then we've got a very good player, so far it looks good.  He can't prove himself as a Premiership player until he's had a few games but he looks like he can do well for us, I've been impressed by what I've seen from him in his few games that he's played.

Forget £6M.  I'd sell him for half that if I had any confidence that we'd sign a replacement.  But in mid-August, with the season starting on Sunday, selling him at any price would just mean 1 less player and we can't afford that at this point.

That is the position we are in, and it is probably the position that all of the clubs we are attempting buy players from are in as well.  You leave things this late, and you either pay over the odds or get shot down.

Thank fuck you aren't our chairman then

Just reminded me of the Chronicle when they reported Liverpool's bid for Milner, and they said we were offered Hobbs, Insua, and an un-named reserve that wasn't even important enough to be named.

Anyone think Oliver was referring to Danny Guthrie by any chance.

O'Neill never went public with the players he was offered by Liverpool, but the Chronicle can reveal that Benitez has dangled 19-year-old defenders Emiliano Insua and Jack Hobbs in front of United.

The third player was so insignificant that my St James’s Park source could not even recall his name – and needless to say United will not be biting.

Aside from that time when he played in Spain?

Means fuck all until he shows what he can do for us.

What has Milner done for us?

Personally hope that he stays and think he will. He's looked promising in pre-season and I reckon a more central role will see him thrive.

Pre-season form only counts for Duff apparently, Milner is past it now.

I'd be pretty annoyed if he's starting regularly this season in a central role because that will mean we've not signed a more specialist central midfielder who can attack.

I don't rate Milner particularly highly, but he's well worth hanging on to for the time being. If we were offered an extortionate amount (i.e. £7m ish) after having got Larsson in I'd let him go though.

All depends on the formation we play I suppose, but I see your point. I do think he can and will do a good job for us in the coming season though, maybe coming off the bench. I think a lot will be determined on how he can impose himself if Keegan decides to play him down the middle. I said last season I believe he'd look better in the centre of the pitch instead of down the flanks so hopefully he can prove me right and prove that a change of position will be beneficial for both himself and the team.

See this suggestion knocked out quite a lot on here, never seen anyone elaborate past it though, as in why they think he'd be good in the middle, cos personally I don't see anything in his play to make me think he'd be good there.

If we're going to stick with the 4-3-3, sell because he's too one-dimensional as a player to be useful in any role, and purchase a replacement with more technical or pass 'n' move ability.

If we're going to switch back to 4-4-2, keep him because he's a half decent winger with the ability to put in a killer cross once in a while, on top of which on his day he can be a handful for decent fullbacks. And he's still young.

If it means we could move for someone like Arteta or Elano or someone of that ilk, we should snap the hands off anyone willing to part with £6m+. We pretty much have a replacement in Gutierrez as it is.

Agree with this entirely.

Looking back, IF it was Guthrie, Insua, and Hobbs, I'd take the deal, especially if there was another 1-2 million thrown in.  Would solve our backup LB and CB spots (which we seem to be after, still) and allow us to focus on the other parts of the pitch.
