Shola Ameobi: Game we've got to win

SHOLA Ameobi has warned that Newcastle United must not have any regrets at the end of their clash with Hull City tomorrow.

The Toon striker made his comeback from a hamstring injury in the 3-0 loss against Arsenal.

And although the Academy product trudged out of the Emirates feeling disappointed, Ameobi is keen to restart the season with three points against a team who considered snapping up the former England Under-21 star.

The Newcastle players have been keeping a low profile with the media this week for obvious reasons but speaking after Arsenal, Ameobi told the Chronicle: “It’s been a good start despite what happened at Arsenal, and we have got these games out of the way now.

We can concentrate on other teams around us – the teams that we know that we have a good chance of doing well against.

“We never go to places like Arsenal to lose, but we have to make sure that we look at Hull and pick up three points.

“At home you have to try to pick up maximum points and that’s what we’ll try to do.”

Ameobi has also had two weeks to shake off a hamstring injury that was originally picked up in the sweltering heat of Majorca in the Mallorca Summer Cup.

Speaking on his return from the treatment room, he added: “To play my first game of the season at Arsenal was good for me.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, but it was always going to be tough.

“They are a top, top side and they showed that.

“For me personally, it was good to get 90 minutes under my belt.

“It was a boost to be thrown in there and be told to go out and do a job.

“The hamstring feels 100% fine now.

“I was champing at the bit to play at Arsenal.

“It’s been an up and down couple of seasons for me, but hopefully this is the end of my injury worries and I can push on from here.”

Shola placing us in a relegation battle?

If Shola plays, yes. ;)

Seriously though, we're playing a side who've just been humped 5-0 at home by a lower mid-table side. Think we'll win this pretty easily actually. Already in just 4 games, we'll have found 5 of the points we'd blown last season. (Man Utd draw, Bolton win, and Hull replacing Derby).

Sounds scarily like Derby last year tbf (they'd just been raped 6-0 by Liverpool and 4-0 by Spurs, and beaten at home by Birmingham).

We're just the kind of team others like to get 'up' for.

Hughton nufc.co.uk:

"They (Geremi and Cacapa) are two very experienced players and it is good to have them back.

We still have a few players missing at the moment so to be able to have Geremi and Claudio available is pleasing.

It is a boost to have them back, not only for their experience but also for their quality. Jonas came down very heavy on his shoulder. At this particular moment, until he is back with us and has been assessed, we cannot say what the exact damage is. We'll know more once we have seen him."

Having Geremi back could be massive. It means at least we can put out a semi-balanced side. Think we'll win now, 2-1 for me as well.

Due to the decimated squad I'd go with: -

                                  Given

Taylor/Edgar  Coloccini  Taylor/Cacapa   Bassong

Gonzalez           Guthrie   Butt     N'Zogbia

                           Xisco   Owen

Probably be similar to that, but I would be betting on Geremi and Shola instead of Gonzalez and Xisco....

I'd heard Geremi wasn't playing when I came up with that team.

New team that I'd play: -

                        Given

Geremi  Coloccini  Taylor   Bassong

Gonzalez  Guthrie   Butt     N'Zogbia

                 Xisco   Owen

Team that will probably play: -

                             Given

Taylor/Edgar  Coloccini  Taylor/Cacapa   Bassong

Geremi               Guthrie   Butt               N'Zogbia

                          Ameobi Owen

Probably going get shot down for this, but I'd seriously consider playing Nile Ranger tomorrow. Back to the 4-3-3 with Owen playing behind Ranger and Xisco could work very well indeed. Hull's defence isn't the greatest and is pretty slow too, so having Ranger on the pitch to run in behind the defence could be deadly. Look at how easily Wigan broke them down. It would be brilliant if Martins was fit but I can't see it which is a shame as he would have caused them major problems. If Ranger is as quick as he's been made out to be, I think it would be worth a punt playing him.

I have my tin hat at the ready...

He's going to be playing for the U18s tomorrow unfortunately.
