NUSC write up of Llambias attendance at the Supporters Panel meeting

Wonder why we want to pay for players upfront yet let other clubs dick us around for our money. Milner money not coming till July!!!

It's because the club is being ran by non-football people.

How does that explain it, like?

Because the club is being ran by businessmen who have no understanding of how to run a football club. Surely what's happened in the last 12months is example enough for that? Ashley running SportsDirect is one thing - but a football club is an entirely different animal. Problems occur when businessmen believe that they are the same.

Thats a myth that i've never understood and doesnt really stand up to any form of scrutiny.

The Glazers are not 'football people', yet are running Man U pretty successfully. Success in business preceeds ownership of a football club and is the reason why owners are there, more so nowadays.

If you mean that football clubs needs to take risks and invest in players then the phrase 'Speculate to accumulate' is a relevant business insight not something football club ownership taught the world.

The Glazers have owned and ran sports clubs before though. They do have some grounding in the field.

Yup - weren't they involved with American Football, before they purchased the Mancs?

And whilst the Mancs have been successful, it's just as well as The Glazers have saddled the club with a very large debt. If The Mancs go through a dip (for example when Ferguson leaves) - they could be in big trouble.

Man United are more than capable of coping with the massive level of debt they have as they're the biggest club in the world. Even if they do have a season or two where they fail to win any tin pots they've got enough money coming in from elsewhere to see them through.

Also, it seems to me as if the club is now being run basically month to month with the view to sell it at the earliest opportunity ie. No big debts (buying players outright and such, paying off bank loans (well moving bank loans)). So they can get rid of it quickly when the time came.

That's the most baffling thing. They're effectively spit polishing the club with the view to attracting buyers yet Llambias seems to talk in the long term. I really do hope MA wants to offload ASAP but I fear we're going to be in the second tier in a few seasons time still finding ways to cut costs.

I suspect he would already be out if he wasn't asking too much money.

Doesnt hold up to any scrutiny, as i said.

“If I could tell you the number of top class managers banging on my door right now...Top, top”

That statement is fucking unbelievable if they indeed see Joe Kinnear as the best bet.

They're banging to be let out....

Revenue > cost (including cost of debt) = you can run the club in profit.*

Glazer learnt that move from a famous linebacker who also dabbled in a bit of Ice Hockey club ownership. The wonderful insight was soon shared with Wall Street and is held as one of the main reasons behind the economic boom of the 90s.

* we're running at a loss btw.

The "easy exit" theory is the only explanation that makes any real sense of how things are being done.

Some people argue that the investment in young players suggests that Ashley is looking longer term. But a pool of cheap talented youngsters is very attractive to a potential buyer looking at what will need spending on the squad in future years.

That statement is f***ing unbelievable if they indeed see Joe Kinnear as the best bet.

They clearly see Kinnear as a "top top manager", so it's hardly surprising. His competition is probably Brian Little, Roy Evans, and Ron Atkinson.

Incredibly one sided article from NUSC, hardly surprising. He won't speak to you if after every meeting you report everything with such a slant.

That's assuming a lot about a potential buyer to think they give two flying fucks about the current crop in the academy.

It might be a passing afterthought for them.  I would imagine first and foremost and encompassing the vast, vast majority of their concern, is finances.  And not the fanciful 5 year projections on squad needs based on current academy talent type of finances, but the concrete debt, turnover and revenue types.

Quite honestly team needs shift so much and the %age of youngsters actually coming through academies is so small it's not worth spending much time on.

edit: sorry that came off harshish.  The non-twat version is : I don't think a nice crop of youngsters is even a minor selling feature of this club to a potential buyer.

The tone of the article was as usual, unnecessarily aggressive. I'm surprised Llambias has even entertained the NUSC given the clear hostility on view.

Write up of the meeting from the perspective of True Faith.

Newcastle United Supporters Panel

St James' Park, 24/Feb/09

The account below is the version of events at the Supporters Panel this last week. It is the opinion of the writer as he/she saw it.

"I wandered up to St James’ and entered its rather quiet main entrance with desk manned by a receptionist accompanied by a club official in shirt and tie passing on his thanks to a couple of visitors and escorting them to their car. How courteous I thought, a good example of the new, friendly and open policy that the club was now adopting towards its customers.

Up the stairs and into the corridor leading to the Chairman’s Suite; one of the executive rooms just off the main corridor leading towards the “royal box”; the posh seats where only the rich and famous get to watch the match; seated on leather and with a complimentary club blanket in winter no doubt.

Still quiet I thought, did I have the right floor, the right room or even the right night. I opened the door and was immediately confronted by a mass of expectant faces, all staring at me as I looked around for an empty seat. Weird, I thought. Then, as I scanned the room for a friendly face I realised the reason for the vacant stares; its wasn’t me they were looking at but the diminutive chap in the suit and open necked shirt sitting directly in front of me, facing the assembled gathering; Nar, can’t be; surely not. A quick double take and rub of the old eyes however confirmed it; Derek Llambias, one of the villains of the south; here to face out his fiercest critics; the fans; the collected gathering of Gallowgate’s finest.

No sooner had I found myself a seat and we were off; ten minutes earlier than scheduled and, judging by the blitzed buffet table, not before time.

So, Derek had finally come good and was attending a fans liaison committee meeting for the first time since taking up the post of Chief Exec. Joined by David Williamson, (Operations Director), Simon Esland (who did the official intros) and the poor man with the hardest job at SJP; the man who puts up all the good news and thoughts of the club on their official website. A job that became a 24/7 post when JFK joined the club and he had to de cipher his mutterings; remove the expletives to make it family friendly and still make it sound rational and from a sound mind.

Oh yes; and two guys from Thomson House, the guys responsible for the scoop of the season; Derek’s first public utterances.

DL commenced by apologising for the poor communication and stated that it was a conscious decision by the club to just keep a low profile and get on with the job at hand; he accepted that in hindsight this was a poor decision and that they underestimated the feeling among the fans; the backlash and the strength of the continuous and uninterrupted protest towards them.

DL; we can’t talk about KK tonight because we are in legal dispute with him which should be sorted soon.

DL; on how JFK was and whether he will he return as manager. DL saw no problems on that score; JFK was doing well was constantly in contact with all members of the playing and coaching staff by text. They all love Joe, and want him to return as soon as he is well enough to.

When pressed about the club following the Arsenal model DL became rather defensive and explained that it was more their policy of having a strong youth system and building the club from such a base that they admired, not their business model but their football model. When pressed again, this time about the Aston Villa quote picked up from the Thomson House interviews DL was more defensive , claiming he was misquoted and requesting that the two press boys confirm this. After much rubbing of backside on leather, they did admit that there seemed to be an element of misquote. (I knew there was a reason why they were there). DL immediately jumped, in saying he admired where Villa were and what they were achieving and it was great and he aspired for us to do the same sometime soon. Those assembled reminded him that we did that often in the past under KK and SBR. This certainly woke up those in minor slumber. Some comments about the London press, Kinnear and his personality and how they can’t wait for him to return, followed.

We were also informed about club turnover, the budget of £10m for the academy (spent £5m) so far, the possible new French academy being planned, the world wide scouting system being set up with 20+ scouts working to unearth new talent.

DL also explained the “Grid” that they have which is used by the manager and non playing staff to identify the gaps in the playing staff; the type of player needed to fill that gap; how they then actively look for that player and hopefully sign him; all through the manager and DW talking to each other. DW might spot them, JFK and /or his representative will watch them and DW will then be sent out to buy them for the figure shown on the grid and agreed by management team as reasonable. Unfortunately this left me cold and sounded like something from a manual of how to sign a player in 10 easy minutes; the idiots guide to the transfer process. Those extra days a week at the training ground mixing with the staff are certainly paying off.

Oh yes; and at this point, when talking of money and transfers DL stated that MA was determined to see this work, has spent £134m on buying the club, put in another £100m and was putting in another £10m this week to keep us going. When questioned on this and asked why he had paid off so much debt to Barclays when it was mortgaged and manageable debt, DL rounded on the questioner asking if he had read the accounts; when told yes, he rounded again and said he mustn’t have understood them and when pressed once more DL spat out that the club would not have been able to afford the interest payments. The questioner and DL then entered into a rather fraught conversation which was abruptly cut short by body language and posturing (he didn’t seem to understand that the questioner was wondering why we couldn’t afford the repayments yet could afford a cash payout of over £60m!)

A bout of further heavy questions and answers ensued, resulting in DL becoming rather agitated by a number of the questions and the note taking by some. He even rounded on a female attendee, questioning her note taking and suggesting they should talk this through with him after the meeting had ended and questioned her attitude. It was all becoming quite surreal.

Among his pronouncements during this period were comments about certain first team players, the fact that we still owe £38m on transfer fees, (some on players no longer at the club) and this won’t be cleared until 2011; that revenue on food and merchandise sales was down, turnover was expected to fall next season because it was expected to fall at all clubs; that there was no apparent boycott of attendance and that attendances were in line with expectations and similar overall to last season (“you can see the figures if you don’t believe me”) the reduction in season ticket prices would cost £1.7m; MA has put in £30 million year 1, £20 million year 2 and hopes to put in £5-£10 million year3. This is MA’s own money. When pressed about debt and statements that contradicted previous statements DL became extremely annoyed about the semantics of “debt” and stated his desire for us to start talking about MA buying the club for £244m rather than £134m if it would make it easier for us to “understand” and not get hung up on.

Things were starting to heat up now and when the matter of transfer policy was returned to and specifically DW’s role at the club someone asked, who bought Xisco; KK came the immediate reply. Gonzalez; ah, that’s a difficult one, move on. Pressed again about DW, DL reiterated his undying love support for the little man, the work he was doing and the fact that he had an office at Benton. Obviously riled, DL mentioned Bassong as a Wise signing; in so much that he completed the deal asking who we thought had been our best player so far this season and answering Bassong, along with most of the gathered group; and the second best, waiting for us to spout back Jonas or Coloccini; GIVEN, responded the lad who he had been at loggerheads at with earlier concerning the debt.

This got us straight into transfer policy; nice one. Given, city offered £3m; we valued him at £15m but because his head had been turned by the chance of winning something at City there was no possibility of keeping him (MA even flew up by helicopter and offered him a five year deal). We settled for £5.9m for the best goalkeeper in the premiership, a loyal servant of over 11 years. We get the money in July. Suggest you try and slot the word competence somewhere in this statement and see if it fits well; on second thoughts don’t bother; it doesn’t.

Our policy is to pay cash; MA lashed out £12.5m cash for Coloccini (later identified when pushed, as our wow signing, thanks to the continued probing by a guy who was obviously talking about a wow replacement for Owen); yet sold Milner on the “never never” to a club he admires; Paid cash for Nolan and Taylor, no mention of N’Zogbia (once gone best forgotten perhaps!) So, we pay cash, sell for credit and wonder why we are cash starved mid season and relying on handouts from the owner. A strange business model and one that I have never come across that has brought success; unless it’s a cash rich turnover business, like a casino perhaps!

Conversation passed on to the work of this liaison committee and the role it could play in getting the message out; this non elected, non accountable and unrepresentative group of individuals; supporters all and very few, other than those from the disabled supporters group and NUSC reporting back to any form of supporters body. Someone suggested they should all be photographed and have a piece in the match day programme. This was frowned upon by many because it was feared they might get recognised and asked questions. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all decent loyal supporters. It’s the system that creates an unbalanced vibe if they’re asked to work on behalf of the club as spokespersons or representatives.

Other issues raised included, the reduced season ticket prices for 2009/10, the lack of any loyalty payment for those who have paid three years in advance and now find that the saving is no more than being given to other season ticket holders who didn’t lash out in advance. The response was, they’re no worse off. Similarly was raised the question of DD payers not getting any VAT refund on their 2009/10 ticket when payment starts to be taken in February; administratively too expensive to implement came the reply.

It was around this time that DL suddenly sussed out that most of those asking the probing questions that he was getting tetchy about were there representing NUSC. Confronting them; he immediately rounded on the a fact that they charged a membership fee and demanded to know why; what their members got for it and demand they answer the question; forgetting of course that you pay £35 to be a member of his club solely to gain a queue jumpers pass for those few games that sell out; games where the tickets cost £45; the A games. The membership issue was answered with gusto by the NUSC member who himself questioned DL on why he was rounding on a loyal supporter of 40 years plus attendance if not to score points. He demanded NUSC open their books; show where the money was going, what it was being spent on; questioned why it needed money. The NUSC representative responded by confirming that it’s in their statute that the books will be available for members to inspect and that they are totally transparent. When invited to meet with NUSC and its membership at any of his open meetings he rounded on the disgraceful letter they had sent to MA back in October; questioned why the website hadn’t been updated to remove statements concerning Ashley Out; condemned the flyer distributed by the supporters before the Blackburn as a further disgrace, yelling that they encourage people to boycott games and merchandising. Rattled or what?

Things came to an abrupt end at this point; it was near 8 o clock and quite frankly although I was amazed how quickly the time had flown; it was probably best for all concerned that it ended when it did. Simon Esland brought the meeting to a close, thanked everyone for attending, impromptu conversations between those in attendance were struck up as the parties gradually filtered out into the cold damp evening. DL did return I believe, to ask the NUSC reps to start printing positive stuff about the meeting and the club and asked for them to “call off” their boycott. Asked to reciprocate and attend further meetings arranged by NUSC his response was that at this stage this is the only formal meeting arrangement that the club will enter into at this time with supporters.

I am sure there are aspects of the meeting that I have failed to pick up on either through forgetfulness, the lack of a totally comprehensive knowledge of shorthand or because the amount of discussion within such a short period was so considerable. However, I hope that it gives a decent flavour of how this meeting went. I am sure they’re others attendees either through forums, on the official club site or via NUSC who can and will, fill the gaps.

i wouldnt put much trust in what llambias says about the transfers, ie the equivocation from the TF article that bassong is a wise signing "in so much as wise completed the deal" even though weve had statements from bassong saying initial contact was from keegan. though it is interesting that Xisco is said to be a Keegan signing, this may explain the reluctance to play him, which would be very shoddy from the club, though it also contradicts what was said earlier about him being one for the future. above all, as others have pointed out, the claims are acrimonious, trying to claim all the credit or shift all the blame, which is exactly what got us into this situation in the first place. it shouldnt be a battle between X's players and Y's players, they both play in the same side under the same manager. trying to divide the responsibility for signings has been a fucking mess and it looks like the general attitude/structure that caused the initial problems is still in place and will probably cause further problems in the future. signings and sales must be co-ordinated with an eye on the team and this means input from the manager otherwise, regardless of how successful individual players may be, they wont amount to a team.

NUSC just kicked off their whole movement on the wrong foot with all the boycott nonsense etc. and this has caused major problems.

The decision to sell the club came on the back of those protests and during that period when the club was in limbo we threw away so many games and then JK was brought in to steady things and has now remained even though he isn't good enough. All this can be traced back to the turbulence that came about then.

You really have to wonder how things would have gone if things didn't kick off and the club just went about finding another manager the normal way after Keegan left.

Lambias it seems is annoyed when NUSC attack him for not spending money on transfers, he explains hes trying to reduce the clubs operating debts, they respond by encouraging supporters not to contribute into NUFC operating pot, I think hes justified in being shitty with them.

The "representatives of supporters" are pissed off that MA paid off the mortgage and secured the business of NUFC for the long term. They would prefer we mortgage the club to the debt and invest the whole pot on new players, a-la-leeds. I think Lambias is justified in being shitty with them.

We sell our players for installment plans because thats the only way to remove them from our wage structure and bring in future transfer funds. We buy our players for cash, meaning if they are shite we can get rid without having to keep paying either them or their previous clubs, thus not harming our transfer budget for that particular season.

DW has identified and brought in our two best players, Bassong and Jonas, our messiah walked. NUSC want Lambias to sack DW. Again i think lambias is justified in being shitty with them.

Lambias says Joe is doing a great job, at this point NUSC should have hit him with a baseball bat  :knuppel2: and directed the entire discussion into changing our leaderless, rudderless sinking ship out of this dire state. Leave the funds alone, were never going to win that battle..

Complete bollocks save for that last bit.

Llambias sounds completely out of his depth. He has no right to be 'shitty' with anyone, especially the fans who are putting/have put money into the club - NUSC included.

Your summarisation of the clubs recent conduct in the transfer market is laughable.

In what way? Did I say they spent enough? Did I say their transfer kitty was realistic? Or did I just say that hes not buying players on the tick, and has no option but to sell on the tick as other clubs refuse to pay up front?

NUSC are actively encouraging supporters not to put money into the club, and on the other hand demanding the club spend more, which is a complete contridiction.

So which of those statements do you most disagree with? or do you automatically assume anyone who doesnt agree with NUSC is a pro MA fan?  you fucking muppet.
