Newcastle United are set to sign Galway United star Alex Murphy, holding off a scatter of other clubs in the battle for the 17-year-old.

Murphy, a native of Annaghdown who joined United's academy from Corrib Celtic, will move to England after he turns 18 this summer.

RTÉ Sport understands that Galway United's representatives are very pleased with how discussions have gone on Tyneside and will see the transfer as evidence that their burgeoning academy, led by club legend Johnny Glynn, is progressing as hoped.

Murphy turns 18 on 25 June, after which he can make his move to the UK. He made his first-team debut last June against Athlone Town as a 16-year-old and has become a regular in Caulfield's side, mainly at left-back.

Your move, creep.

U18's taken apart at Man City today - 13-0

:undecided:

My best mate's nephew is at the academy - James Huntley and he 'played' today.

Just shows the absolute state the previous owner left our club's structure in.

That’s OK we beat their under 9s 6-1 recently,  honestly I wouldn’t read much into it. Our under 8s are battering City, LFC, Man Utd and most academies. We do have a great crop mind at that level. None of them will make it though at the highest level.

I think when it's lower level you will get big scorelines but at U18 level that is embarrassing

Years of neglect combined with City investment heavily has mo doubt played a part
