Mahoneys Tache
I’m sure the lad will be permanently scarred by moving from Barnsley to Newcastle to play for a prestigious football club.

A typically British system no less, where children that age and younger are typically removed from their parents and surroundings to receive better education. I’d hazard a guess the kids who end up in PL academies are usually more intrinsically motivated to do so then kids who are sent to boarding schools. Boarding schools where the parents pay the tuition fees? I'm completely against boarding or private school edcuation as a whole but that's a different topic I feel as though none of these examples are organisations paying £350k for a child? A club is being compensated for their development of a footballer. I don't see the issue.

I think any child wellfare argument holds more validity than which party foots the bill for talent development. Surely you wouldn’t find the practice of football academies less troublesome if parents were paying to get their children enrolled in the best academies as opposed to the clubs paying (and getting compensated for) young players’ development? In your argument I don’t really see how age matters much if at all as it seems your objections seems primarily based around the principle of player contracts and transfer fees in general. By the same token, should this lad be penalised just because he happened to be from Barnsley academy and not from a more glamorous club? He'll have better facilities here, more earning opportunities. Plus Barnsley are getting a decent compensation package with future earnings if he makes it.

leffe186
After the discussion, this article in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/oct/18/premier-league-scramble-young-talent-overheated-failing-market Didn’t know about the ESC and GBE stuff. No surprise that they point out this gives massive benefits to multi-club groups. Also no surprise that the one club that gets very thinly-veiled excuses made for it is Liverpool. ”Liverpool are viewed as less aggressive, with a source saying they are more reluctant to pay high wages. The champions caused a fuss by poaching Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea, causing friction between the clubs at academy level but…”

GEFAFWISP
It means all the good youth players are on loan right? Right? Edited October 21, 2025 by GEFAFWISP
Virtua Stiva
It’ll take absolute years to catch up and to start pumping out good youngsters, I’m afraid. I’d also argue that experiences like this and youth football aren’t all about results. It’s about player development first

Stifler
We were alright in the first half, if not short of creating little. 2nd half their quality tore us apart.

Dr.Spaceman
Benfica's more recent former academy graduates are at clubs like PSG, Man City & Dortmund whereas ours are at Forest, Leeds and Southampton. I'd wager their current academy is littered with potential stars of the future, whereas ours... Edited October 21, 2025 by Dr.Spaceman

maybe_next_year
People always seem to overestimate what Shola's job entails too. Its much more about making sure the players are okay once they're on their loans and looking after their welfare more than anything. Absolutely nothing to do with finding/arranging loans. Harper comes across really well in his interview on the previous page (https://archive.ph/9gZoF) and makes a good point about winning too many games not being a good sign at this level... still would be nice to see them not get hammered.
