THE man who discovered Alan Shearer says he has "every faith" he will turn the Toon’s fortunes around, having spoken to his protege last night.

 

Legendary talent spotter Jack Hixon gave Shearer his big break when he took him to Southampton as a teenager and the pair have had a close bond ever since.

 

Speaking exclusively to The Chronicle, Jack today revealed the 38-year-old Magpies hero rang him last night before news of the dramatic appointment broke.

 

"He said he just felt he had to give what he could for Newcastle United," said Jack, 87.

 

"He just wants to do it out of love for the club. That is the point.

 

"He loves the club, he’s passionate for the club and he wants them out of the mire.

 

"If he keeps them up he will become a hero all over again, but it is not an ego trip for him, he is doing it out of love."

 

Hixon spotted Shearer playing as a youngster for teams including Cramlington Juniors, Wallsend Boys Club and Newcastle City Boys.

 

He took him for a trial at Southampton, where he went on to burst into the first team, before securing a big money move to Blackburn Rovers.

 

It was at Ewood Park that Shearer won a Premier League medal but he said his proudest moment of all was signing for Newcastle in a £15m deal.

 

After hanging up his boots, the former England captain resisted several calls for him to step into the dug-out but he hopes to rescue United from relegation after agreeing to take charge for the remaining eight games of this season.

 

And Hixon, who stills lives in Whitley Bay, said: "Shearer is the man to do it."

 

He said: "His strength of character will pull them round.

 

"He imposes it naturally on people and his very presence will pull them up. I hope that will happen and I think it will.

 

"He has shown that character from day one of his career. I wish him well, so much that you wouldn’t believe.

 

"I have every faith he will do it. I know it is a tough fixture list, but he will want to get started and get cracking."

This has obviously been on the table for a while. I think Shearer has timed it to perfection too, from his own perspective. If he had looked at this any earlier then it would have meant he would have been more accountable if we go down.

 

By waiting untill our league position is where it is, then if we go down, we ended up where he started, which means 'no progress' but we didnt go backwards.

He's certainly judged the mood perfectly. Most fans are resigned to the fact that we'll go down. If he can pull a rabbit out of the hat and keep us up, then he'll be a hero, if we go down, then no one will point the blame at him and rightly so.

Couldn't say it any better myself Rich, my feelings exactly.  Shearer has always been my favorite footballer of all time as well as a childhood idol and hero. Everything about the man intrigues me from his mannerisms to the way he handles himself.  Dream come true for me to be honest.

Full respect to Shearer for taking this on. I have always had a nagging doubt that Shearer was being a bit of cock tease with the Newcastle manager's job but for him to accept the responsibility when we are up against the wall speaks volumes for the man. I know there is a feeling of he's got nowt to lose but I don't think that's true. No one wants to be the manager that takes his local team down and it's a massive risk whatever anyone says. I'm sure there will be a hefty financial benefit from this move. That goes without saying and it probably did have a sway on his decision; he's got a comfy lifestyle atm - sitting on a no-doubt handsome payslip for simply talking about footy every Saturday night. Newcastle would have had to atleast match that wage. I hope people don't use this as a bat to hit him with; if the cash is aiding his motivation then fair enough.

 

The reason why he's taken the job is because he knows he'll be branded a hero, again, for keeping us up. And rightly so. Aye he's already a legend but to be able to save us from the cusp of relegation is something he never had to do as a player tbh. If he can do it as a manager it would be amazing for him.

 

And to echo Big TRon there; it's hardly no-risk. If he takes us down it will pang like a bitch for him. The sheer determination of the man, combined with the devotion and pride he's got in this club, will mean it will kill him if he's the one at the helm when we go down. Shearer is Newcastle United and i for one think there is absolutely no fucking way we are off down now. No chance.
