Triesman quits in bribes storm

LORD TRIESMAN has quit his role as England's 2018 World Cup bid chairman after a bribes storm.

Triesman, who is also chairman of the FA, is reported to have alleged that Spain was planning to bribe referees at this year's World Cup with the help of Russia, countries who are also bidding for the 2018 showpiece.

England's World Cup bid team had earlier faxed letters of apology to the Spanish and Russian football federations as well as FIFA, distancing themselves from the chairman's allegations.

Triesman's alleged comments were made in a private conversation, taped without his knowledge.

Triesman was quoted as saying. "My assumption is that the Latin Americans, although they've not said so, will vote for Spain.

"And if Spain drop out, because Spain are looking for help from the Russians to help bribe the referees in the World Cup, their votes may then switch to Russia."

Lord Triesman sent her countless affectionate texts. He described in one how he craved her company and said in another: ‘I need you’. He ended one message with ‘BKsAO’ – which 37-year-old Miss Jacobs said stood for ‘big kisses all over’.

Laurent Blanc has quit his job at Bordeaux.

I reckon he will replace Domenech as coach of the French national team after the WC.

Yeh itll be nailed on. With Chamakh off to Arsenal too, it seems like a promising team is splitting up. Can't see Gourcuff staying in that situation either.

He'll go to Arsenal too, if Cesc leaves.

Probably for the best given the horrific second half of the season Bordeaux has had. Blanc has to take a pretty big part of the blame. No point forcing it and might as well get someone else in. But no European Cup at all next season probably means the likes of Gourcuff and Diarra might fancy moving again.

I look forward to seeing Chamakh in the Prem... he has an awesome touch but can be a bit a diving idiot at times. Interesting to see if he gets off on the right or wrong foot in England.

Just stumbled upon this article from the mail. I think it's pretty telling to see how many teams have done the double since the PL came about compared to before that.

Yeah absolutely. 5 times by 5 different teams in 97 years pre-Premier League, followed by 6 times in 16 years by just 3 teams, no matter how many times we're told we've never had it so good it's clear to see the PL has stifled competition

Lars Lagerbäck hasn't been paid for two months from the Nigerian FA.

This is nonsense. The man has a salary of over 1 million USD for five bloody months (presumably for being white and foreign, as all he will do is the World Cup and some qualifiers before the contract expires), and now Euros want to act like we are not paying this man. If they weren't paying he wouldnt be there. Also, we don't have an FA....we have a football federation, which only serves to make this more erroneous.

African Cup of Nations moved to odd-numbered years. This is going to be good for their teams that are also in the WC, having a major tournament just 6 months before it was quite disrupting, I think. That also means we'll have an ACN two years in a row (yay?), 2012 and 2013.

The rampant stupidity on display from CAF is shocking as always. Issa Hayatou has been president of CAF for longer than I have been alive, and clearly he has no clue. The day he leaves will be a good day for our football. How are we meant to do the qualifiers for 2013 in only one year? Maybe I am misnunderstanding, but apparently the qualifiers for the WC and the ACN will now be seperated. This means we have to play even more qualifying matches. After the disaster that was Angola 2010, is it really prudent to give Libya less time to prepare to host the ACN? I don't see how anyone benefits from a 2013 ACN, though I'm sure someone is pocketing money. I'm fine with it being in odd years though.

The ACN should have taken a three year gap while switching schedule instead. According to the BBC article, the same qualifiers willl apply for 2012 and 2013, which means they will have the same contesting teams

Not sure where they'll fit the additional qualifiers, I'm not familiar with the current calendar but do African teams have dates in the FIFA calendar to fill?

Here's a nice story, like something from an old skool football comic.

Every year we play in the Hong Kong 7s tournament (and we seem to win it most years, too).

This year, we got out there and had an injury crisis. Word went out amongst spectators (I kid you not) for someone who could play a bit and fancied a couple of games.

In the end a 23 year old Brit (QPR fan, mind) who happens to work in HK but had never played football beyond "village team" level got the call, and ended up playing for Aston Villa against teams like Ajax, Rangers, West Ham and Sunderland

We won it, and there he is third from left, unexpectedly waving a trophy around with professional footballers, two of whom have played in the PL this season, and one of whom has scored in it (and in the UEFA Cup). Nice story.

I'm assuming the small child at the front was the mascot, before any witty scampster weighs in with that one ;-)

GG may recognise the youth with his hands on the mascot's shoulders. Harry Forrester, I thought he had disappeared.
