Alan Smith appreciation thread

He rarely misplaces a pass or header, even when under pressure, which sets him leagues ahead of our holding midfield specialist - Nicky Butt!!

Personally I would love him to score a couple of goals as well this season, just to put the icing on the cake.  Well on the way to being player of the season for me.

Kevin Nolan also deserves a note for effort as well, while others are sauntering around at their own pace he is busting a gut to close players down etc.  Again not the most talented player but, great for us in this league!

Play him alongside Barton or Guthrie, not Butt.

I think it's fair to say that a few of our players have found their level.

I guess I'm the only one who hasn't been blown over by his performances.

nope.

Same here, his biggest asset is that he isnt Nicky Butt imo

Typical Championship player who should be moved on if we go up. Fine playing against the likes of Shaun Derry, Darren Potter & Grant Leadbitter in this league, will be a liability as he proved in his first season against Fabregas, Gerrard, Lampard, etc.

Depends really. On his ability to adapt, and what formation we play. In a 4-4-2 he's done for, but in a 4-3-3 like what Pompey used to play he could do a more basic version of what Diarra was, assuming he worked on timing of his tackles.

He's got good stamina and has shown more determination than he ever has for us before (the whole "he's a trier" thing was a myth in the Premiership, cos he was just lost wherever the fuck he played). Plus, he's got a fixed role now and in this division, against these players, he's got the attributes to be streets ahead of the rest of the league. It's a team effort though. Smith infront of Taylor and Coloccini works a treat... however against Donny - whilst individually Smith had a good game - we looked shaky and unorganised at times. He's one third of the best defensive crux in the league and from a defensive perspective, they all bounce off each other. It comes with continuity and the sheer fact they're just above the opposition in just about every way. So confidence, in other words.
