Cajun
If he didn't want to sign for us he shouldn't have signed a £100,000+ per week contract, if it was too much to turn down then fair enough but for that sort of money you should put in the effort for the length of the contract, not give up because you are feeling a bit "low". LoveItIfWeBeatU
Anyone who thinks Owen won't be at Man U next season is wrong. He always stays to the end of his contract. Except when someone is daft enough to pay £17m and £100k/week for him. I'd forgotten about that one! He went to the end of his contract with Liverpool and Newcastle. No one will buy him off Man U and he'll happily sit there for another season basking in the glow of training with top quality professionals so that will be 3 'to the end of the contracts' versus 1 left before the end of contract with Real Madrid. I still think he'll retire after he leaves Man U. He thinks too highly of himself to play for a team not pushing for a European spot. Didn't he sign for Madrid for £8m or something? Pretty sure it wasn't free. My knowledge on Owen's career isn't as good as I thought it was. I do know we did a swap deal with Real Madrid for Owen. Santiago Munez went the other way. (Goal! 2: Living The Dream) Owen will probably venture abroad again, now his England career is basically over. Very much doubt it. He already said when he left Spain he didn't want to go abroad again. His horses are in England so he'll stay near them. I can't see him being willing to play his way down the league. He's played for top clubs. He'd never have come to Newcastle if it wasn't for the World Cup that year. Who would want him who he'd be willing to play for? I wouldn't say he gave up, but players aren't machines, and if a player's heart isn't in it, then that's going to come out somehow. That mad summer when we signed 2 reluctant players for £26 million and exorbitant wages, was a real disaster from which we haven't yet recovered. Guest JamesyJazz
Cronky, that's all true but he is the one who clearly didn't give a f*** during his final season and despite being our captain didn't even feel it necessary to say anything about our relegation. He was in decline as a player, and even at his peak, was never the sort that could lift a bad side. He's a specialist finisher who needs other players to create things for him. He doesn't create much for his team-mates. I daresay his morale was low last season, and he was looking to leave at the end of his contract. In those circumstances, he's not going to be able to lift his team-mates. But all this was the inevitable end when Shepherd bulldozed through his signing when Owen had made it clear that he wanted to join Liverpool instead. I don't think the club behaved very well at that point, and I have the feeling that NUFC got what it deserved at the end. That underpins my reluctance to have a go at Owen. Poor Owen with his low morale problems last season. If £120,00 per week is not motivational enough for him to actualy show some resemblance of interest in performing for the people who pay his wages then he deserves all the negative comments being bandied about. Should have(I know we couldn't) paid him minimum wages and put him on a performance bonus per assist and goals scored.

I can understand why he was pissed off last season, even Guthrie was on more than him.
Tooj
That wasn't a dip of a rod either - just seems it's been a while now. Found it quite sad for this thread to be updated whenever anything at all happened to him. I can entirely see why he comes across as a huge twat, but still. As Adebisi said; Rooney. I wouldn't say money was the best motivator, especially if it's not dependent on how you perform. We shelled out the money to sign the player, forgetting that there's not much point in signing someone who doesn't really want to join. In any case, as we've seen this season, the main reason for Owen's performances weren't his motivation - he's just not that good any more.
gazza ladra
Owen's attitude was terrible and he contributed nothing as captain. The sight of him sulking about the field said it all. But then, Keegan at least managed to squeeze something useful out of him for a time. Funny how that experiment went by the wayside.

Ronaldo
3 Premier League goals last season and he's on a BT advert. Owen's another fine example of English players and media hype. Perhaps the very finest.
