wormy
Question to all: Would you swap a decade of Shearer in our shirt, for the FA Cup in say 1998? Very good question; interesting that the opinion seems very much split on this one. Im in the no camp personally for reasons put much more eloquently by others already. Mattoon
Not a chance, Shearer gave me so many fond memories, I wouldn't swap his time here for anything, the man was everything a striker should be and more.
Guest firetotheworks
This would have been a lot harder to answer back when it felt like the F.A Cup meant anything.
Disco
Question to all: Would you swap a decade of Shearer in our shirt, for the FA Cup in say 1998? 98, no. 99, yes.
Guest Howaythetoon
I personally wouldn’t swap one solitary FA Cup win for the decade or so of Shearer and all those goals, moments and what he as a striker and goalscorer made me feel watching him playing for us that I don’t think a Cup win could ever quite top. A title win would be different of course, but in that context I don’t think I’d swap the KK era we enjoyed for the Dalglish era Blackburn enjoyed which resulted in a title for them and not for us. I’m sure they wouldn’t swap either and rightly so. Sadly for Shearer, his performances and goals for us deserved to be rewarded with silver, but as ever with Newcastle, we’ve had more great players than great teams and because of that the Shearers will always mean that little bit more to us and their goals, performances and moments more special. For me certainly anyway.
Foluwashola
Got to live through a decade of watching our greatest ever player, and one of our own. We've got 6 of those FA Cup pots already man, not a contest.
Guest alijmitchell
Probably a bit against the grain, but I think I would swap it for a win. One big trophy win would have done so much for the club. Those finals as a kid crushed me. Imagine what it would be like knowing that our club is actually capable of success and has achieved it in recent times. Theres such an emotional connection to shearer, and I love that he chose to stay with us, but at a time when the FA Cup was a huge thing, a win would have sent the city bonkers in a way no-one would have forgotten. ToonArmy1892
I can't believe anyone saying Shearer over an FA Cup win. You are basically saying you prefer a player over a trophy for NUFC. Really? The club and it's honours list is more important than any player ffs
huss9
fa cup win over any player, for me anyway.
geordiedean
Watching Shearer and that 95-96 team and even some of Bobbys teams was an absolute joy but if someone said you could swap it all for us to win a trophy id bite your hands off. Im 44 years old and my first game was in 1978 and went regular prior to moving to the US and in them years give or take a few years purple patch ive been fed on a diet of shit. After seeing us win fuck all for 40 years and having accepted that ill never see us win anything in my lifetime id swap any kind of feeling of winning a trophy over any player no matter how good he was Anyone saying different needs their head read to be honest
Shearergol
I can't believe anyone saying Shearer over an FA Cup win. You are basically saying you prefer a player over a trophy for NUFC. Really? The club and it's honours list is more important than any player ffs Nah, football is played on the pitch. 10 years of entertainment far outweighs the knowledge that it says on a bit of paper that we beat 6 teams to win a cup once. Guest firetotheworks
We're so alienated from the idea of winning things that we think it's just about looking at a bit of paper. The memories, celebrations, and sheer jubilation at winning a trophy can't even be taken into account because no one can imagine it.
AyeDubbleYoo
It’s difficult to swap Shearer for anything in hindsight, but if we had won something we’d have different heroes. The history of the club could’ve been completely different as well, with the title if not the cup.

AyeDubbleYoo
Winning is overrated. The beauty is in the journey While this is true, we haven’t won anything almost in living memory. That’s getting a bit silly. Actually you could argue that if we hadn’t come so close we wouldn’t be worrying about it. Shearer was part of delivering that almost-glory. Plenty of clubs win nowt and don’t seem to bother about it.
Guest neesy111
Winning is overrated. The beauty is in the journey Not when it's 63 years since your last domestic trophy.

Fair point, even so, after a few months its almost forgotten while Shearer would still be playing every week for ten years

M4
The question could then become: would people swap winning the league in 96 for Shearer then never joining.
