There's jumping the gun, then there's saying you've signed a player when there isn't even a financial agreement in place. Only we'd do that.

ashley's not stupid when it comes to selling players (Given aside as we got ripped off there) - I think there must have been some financial transaction agreed upon and they havent fullfilled their end of the bargain - may be only a case of a hundred grand or 2 but enough for ashley to pull the plug and call their bluff. or it may be to do with the ANC and when they officially start paying him. who knows?

Not a bad little point actually. We might be negotiating with players and agents trying to get them on as cheap a wage as possible, and now agents could say well hang on, you're saving yourselves £50k a week straight away.

This whole ordeal just about fits the recent events around the club. Nothing is ever simple, and rarely is the path clear. Finally the club have agreed a fee for a player whose departure will not negatively affect us, but alas, things have managed to go wrong.

 

It would be interesting if Geremi went to this club as they are the fierce rivals of Geremi's youth club who are their Ankara neighbors. Wonder how the atmosphere would be for him at that derby.

Hughton to end saga over midfielder Geremi

CHRIS HUGHTON has revealed that former Newcastle United captain Geremi will be allowed to leave St James’ Park this January as he looks to slash the Magpies’ wage bill.

 

In the latest chapter of the Geremi saga, Hughton says that he does not want an unhappy player on his hands.

 

The fact that the utility player attempted to arrange his own Toon escape by heading to Turkey without informing anybody at Newcastle was proof that the Cameroon international is no longer content to sit and pick up his £58,000 per week wage packet without playing.

 

The Chronicle understands that Geremi’s decision to go AWOL and speak to Ankaragucu did not go down well at United.

 

But Hughton has indicated he only wants what is best for a player who he has often turned to for advice, with the African having bben a member of the United player committee.

 

Geremi headed to Angola for the African Cup of Nations with his move to the Turks still up in the air, but talks are ongoing during the tournament.

 

Hughton said today: “I think the fact that he went away and spoke to other clubs shows an intent on his side that something might be done, and he is the one in the squad that hasn’t played.

 

“What we have said is that we don’t see anybody going out, but Geremi – who hasn’t had the regular time that others have had on the pitch – would probably be the exception.

 

“And I think there’s every chance that something will happen with him.”

 

Geremi’s involvement in this summer’s World Cup is also a key factor contributing to his unrest, with the ex-Chelsea man fearing he won’t make the trip if he is not playing first-team football.

 

And the Indomitable Lions manager Paul Le Guen also wants players to be regulars at their clubs, with the former Rangers boss not frightened to make big decisions, having recently axed United old boy Seb Bassong who looked a cert to be heading to Angola.

 

Hughton added: “In all honesty, he has got the World Cup at the end of the season, and his games have been very limited here,” added Hughton.

 

“He’s a wonderful individual.

 

“He trains well every day, and he certainly has not been a problem, even though he’s not been playing.

 

“He needs to be playing games, and there is a chance something will happen with him.”

 

However, while Geremi is still a Newcastle player for now, Hughton says that United are monitoring his safety on a day-to-day basis in Angola after the terrorist attack on the Togo team, which left three people dead.

 

Hughton said: “We’re keeping tabs on it, but all of those decisions are very much made at an international level.

 

“We expect him to be there, and to enjoy playing.”
