West Brom 4 - 2 Newcastle United - 23/01/10 - post match reaction from page 18

Lee Ryder:

"Ameobi picked up a shoulder injury"

"United were forced to reshuffle with a 3-4-2 formation.

There were blasts of "You're not fit to referee" at ref Linington who had denied United TWO clear penalties at one end and pointed to the spot with no qualms at the other end.

It was an abysmal display from the ref."

"Coloccini then clashed with Miller when the WBA star collapsed on the ground.

Krul tried to pick him up and was booked."

"Well six goals, two penalties, three stonewall appeals for Newcastle turned down and a red card.

Another exciting game but one drenched in controversy as ref Linington caused a storm for Newcastle United"

We did make 5(?) changes from monday night while WBA made 0, but it's the way we've been dumped out more than anything.

Aslong as we make sure we gain promotion, then this doesn't really matter tbh - even though a cup run would of been nice, we have to make sure we take advantage of the league now.

MUST.

I agree, although drawing and losing to a title rival will hurt the confidence and pride a bit.

So long as we beat Palace this will be quickly forgotten. The 5th round will hopefully be a distraction for West Brom.

Speaking to a Mansfield town fan on the train back who had gone as a neutral and he said that he watches non league football every week and has never seen any performance as bad as that in his life

Footballing or referreeing?

he said it was the worst refereeing performance in his life. ive just got back from the game and it was beyond a joke. the first was not a penalty in a million years, i cant say for the second because it was down the other end but shola going down was an absolute stonewaller. I couldnt comment on the first goal crossing the line either but if we had got and converted that pen it would be 2-2 and id have backed us to win the way we were playing. The referee ruined the game and dont believe the sky sports match report either:

"The Newcastle players were unhappy with the decision but could have few complaints when referee James Linnington then gave Albion a 31st-minute penalty.

A long ball forward was not dealt with by Magpies defender Tamas Kadar and Bednar wrestled his way clear.

The Czech striker was in on goal until Kadar hauled him down and the defender was fortunate to only see yellow."

Its irrelevant how bad we were in the context of the decisions as we were right back in the game and then the ref cocked up royally again.

This isn't hiding our own inadequacies as we weren't allowed to contest this game fairly.

I'd have been interesting to see how many penalties this 'influenced' Ref would have given us on Monday.

Him and his linesman on the main stand side were a disgrace. In this instance they cost us the game regardless of how bad we played 1st half.
